SOFTWARE

On-Campus
If you plan to complete this course in the UAS Sitka Campus Computer Lab, the software you will use is the Email and WWW browser of your choice. We currently offer Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. We will ask that you register for a permanent email address with the free WWW Mail company of your choice. How to do so is located in the Email Preferences document located online at: http://www.shuilongs.com/pref.html.

Off-Campus/Distance Students
You may use any ISP (Internet Service Provider) that you wish. Any telecommunications software for IBM-Compatible or Macintosh computers will be fine. Any email and WWW browser is fine. By the end of the class we will be asking that you register for a permanent web address with the free WWW Host company of your choice or set up your own Network.

COMPUTERS

On-Campus
If you plan to complete this course in the UAS Sitka Campus computer Lab, you will use the hardware provided in the lab. The computer lab has a direct connection to the University of Alaska computer Network (UACN). The computer lab has both IBM-compatible and Macintosh computers available for student use.

Off-Campus/Distance Students
If you plan to complete this course from your home or office, you will need to have access to a PC, a modem, and a telephone line and an ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as PTI, Worldcom, or the UACN.

This instructor will not be able to provide extensive assistance in setting up browsers, modems and software due to the many different systems and variables involved. She will attempt to. Students should refer to their online Help guides/manuals or their program manuals.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The Advanced Internet course introduces the student to the advanced Multimedia services and Web Page providers supported by their Internet Service Provider. This inludes searching for the latest in Internet Technology, research and set-up in Networking, Web Page Authoring skills and Web Page server assessment, set up and configuration.

The student will locate, download and use latest in Internet Technology, including multimedia with audio, visual, and virtual reality sites and communication programs.

An understanding of Networks with an extra credit opportunity to configure their own.

The student will search, locate and choose a Web Page HTML Editor and apply basic web page authoring concepts and design.

The student will use wise critical evaluation skills to choose a Web Provider and successfully configure a Web Site.

The student will gain the skills needed to responsibly, safely and ethically post a Web Page on the Internet. Issues on copyrights, citing, security and ethics will be explored with their personal One Document site completing the course.

FORMAT

This Online Internet course is composed of short narratives, resource guides, texts and guides, and hands-on assignments. Each assignment will require a message to be sent to the instructor via electronic mail or a post to a specific newsgroup or chat room with the final assignment being an online one document Web Site.

GRADING

This course is Pass/Fail. Students need to successfully complete all of the exercises to pass the course. If a student doesn't successfully complete an exercise, they will be notified by e-mail and requested to resubmit it. There will be no written tests.

P Indicates 100 % successful completion of course material
F Indicates less than 100 % successful completion of course materials.
W Indicates formal withdrawal from the course.
NB No basis for grade. Indicates that too little work was completed to assign any other grade.
