Configuring Windows 95
PPP for ACAD1
Note: Keep your Windows95 disks handy while doing this configuration as you may need them.
Instructions for Setting Up PPP (Point to Point Protocol)
If the Dial-up Adapter is not listed:
- 1. single click on "Add" button
- 2. select Adapter, click on "Add" button
- 3. select Microsoft from the Manufacturer
- 4. select Dial-up Adapter and click "OK" button.
- 1. single click on "add" button
- 2. select Protocol
- 3. click on "add" button
- 4. select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers
- 5. select TCP/IP, and click "OK" button.
- 1. Select TCP/IP from the list of installed network components,
and click on "Properties" button
- 2. Click on IP Address
Select Obtain and address automatically
- 3. Click on DNS Configuration
Select Enable DNS
In the DNS server search order, type:
- 4. 137.229.150.16
- 5. Click on Add
- 6. Now type:
- 7. 137.229.10.39
- 8. Click on Add
- 9. Now click OK
- 10. Click OK on the Network Window to finish
Adapter Protocol setup.
(Windows may ask for Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM.
It may ask for a Host Name --- if so, enter ACAD1.
And it may ask to restart Windows 95)
When you are back in Windows 95 after restarting,
click on Start, then Programs, the Accessories.
Click on Dial-up Networking.
- 1. Note: If you do not see Dial-up Networking in the
Accessories list, you will have to reinstall (or install)
the Dial-up Networking software by using the following procedure
detailed in steps 1-15. This procedure is only necessary if
you do not see Dial-Up Networking in Accessories. Otherwise,
skip steps 1-15.
- 2. To begin, single click on Start Button in the lower left corner.
- 3. Go to Settings Panel, then single click on Control Panel.
- 4. Click on Add/Remove Programs.
- 5. Click on Windows Setup (the middle of three tabs towards
the top of the screen). Wait for a few seconds until the screen changes.
- 6. Make sure the check box in front of Communications is checked.
If it is not, use your mouse to make the check mark appear.
- 7. Then click OK and the communications software will be installed.
- 8. You will have to insert your Windows 95 installation disks or
CD-ROM to install Dial-Up Networking.
- 9. If the check mark in front of Communications WAS checked already,
click on the Details button, and make sure there is a checkmark
in front of Dial-Up Networking.
- 10. If it is not, use your mouse to check it, and the hit OK
on the Communications Window, then OK on the Add/Remove Programs
Properties Window.
- 11. Again, Windows 95 will ask you to insert your installation disks
in order to install the Dial-up Networking Software. If both items
were checked, it's a Windows problem and you will need to call
Microsoft Support.
- 12. Now click on the START button,
- 13. then Programs Button,
- 14. then Microsoft Accessories Button.
- 15. Click on Microsoft Dial-up Networking Button.
- 16. Double click on Make New Connection.
- 17. Type ACAD1 in the Computer Name field (default is
My Connection)> Note: if your modem is not listed in the
Make New Connection window, click on Start, Settings, and
Control Panel. Click on Add New Hardware,, and follow the
prompts to add you modem.
- 18. Click Next.
- 19. In the phone number field, type 907 in the area code.
Add the phone number 747-8271 in the appropriate field.
- 20. Click on Next.
- 21. Click on Finish to finish setting up the Connection.
An icon will appear in the Dial-up Networking foler named ACAD1.
- 22. Single click on ACAD1, click the right mouse button and
click Properties.
- 23. Click on Configure button.
- 24. Click on Options and put a check mark on Bring up terminal
window after dialing.
- 25. Click OK.
- 26. Click on Server type, and make sure PPP:Windows 95,
Windows NT 3.5, Internet is selected in the Type of Dial-up
Server and make sure there is a check mark on TCP/IP in the
Allowed Network Protocol.
- 27. Click OK, then click OK one more time on the ACAD1 window.
Now you are ready to dial and connect to ACAD1.
- 1. Double click on the ACAD1 icon in the Dial-up Networking
folder to dial and connect.
- 2. It will bring up a Connect to ACAD1 Window, with 747-8271
in the phone number field.
- 3. Click on Connect to dial the number.
- 4. Once connected you will see the ACAD1 Screen and a Username
prompt for Kerberos.
- 5. Type your userid (must be lower case) then press enter.
- 6. Type the password for your userid (lowercase) and press enter.
Your kerberos password is usually your SS# unless otherwise specified.
- 7. If your userid and password are valid, you will see the
UAS-DU-01>Prompt. If so, type c PPP at that Prompt,
hit return, and click on Continue.
- 8. When ACAD1's dialer verifies the connection, the Connecting
to ACAD1 Window will change to a Connected to ACAD1 Window.
The Disconnect button will also appear which can be used to end
your connection when you are finished running your applications.
Now you can run Winsock (TCP/IP) applications like:
Netscape, Teamlinks, Telnet, TN3270, etc.
You may want to minimize the Connected to ACAD1 Window.
When you are done surfing the net, and want to disconnect,
go to the Connected to ACAD1 window again and click on Disconnect.
