What Is The Cavern?
How do the qualities of Power, Knowledge, Exploration and Exchange work together to create a Power Shift for you personally as well as the world, why do we call it Power CERFing, and what is this site all about anyway?
Technical Notes
How do you clear your cache and why should you do so regularly? What are the latest "bombs" and "attacks" and how do you protect against them? How do you safely download and use programs and fonts? How do you bookmark/favorite a link within a "frame", "tree" or "target" page? What does that aggravating No DNS sign really mean and what do you do next? This section gives details on these Power Spelunking tips and much, much more.
The Challenge
The Challenge will be available January 1st, 1999. We dare you to take the Internet Spelunking Mastery Challenge. Here you must solve 100 riddles to locate 100 sites and discover the PowerShift Knowledge hidden within each. Different levels and speed challenges offer various certificates and rewards. The next Mastery Speed Challenge begins January 1st, 1999.
The Reward
This site will be available January 1st, 1999. Take the Challenge and win a specially commissioned Cavern tee-shirt, Alaskan tote-bag or Certificate of Internet Spelunking Mastery. We can be persuaded to sell you a teeshirt or totebag if you don't win and really, really just have to have one, however the Certificate of Internet Spelunking Mastery must be earned!
Knowledge
This is the home of the University of Alaska-SE Sitka CIOS Internet courses - commonly referred to as the UAS-S IVC (for In the Virtual Classroom or Internet Virtual Classroom). Earn college credit for the online cerfing and web page building you are doing! Here you will also find links to guides and textbooks on terminology, navigating, and miscellaneous subjects, as well as the latest in technology certifications and online news.
Communication
Today internet Communication challenges Information as the "Most Widely Used" of the top three basic services offered by most ISPs (Internet Service Providers). Entertainment follows a distant thir, but this standing improves as multimedia technology advances become more widely used by the common user. This section links you to a variety of ways to communicate with the world from the most popular of programs (email) to the latest in virtual reality. Learn about free web mail providers such as Hotmail; multimedia programs that allow you "real time" ability to chat, type, message, draw, listen to music or play games together. There are links to programs such as ICQ and PowWow; Discussion groups such as listservs, newsgroups; and real-time chats such as IRCs and Web based chat rooms. The Cubonics section provides links to dictionaries, acronyms and emoticons so that you might study internet "etiquette" in order to best understand and be understood.
Power
The most dangerous place to spelunk in all the Cavern, this section provides connections to what we consider to be "Power" or "Netaholic" sites. Very often PowerShift Exchange recommendations offered from our viewers are quickly added here. Examples of Power Sites would be:
A site that offers dictionaries and translations in many languages, versus a site that offers language translation in only Japanese.
A site that offers links to eclectic radio stations around the world, versus a site to only one jazz station.
A site that offers the ability to search twenty different search engines at the same time, versus only one engine.
Warning: Netaholics Anonymous considers use of Power Sites to be addictive and time consuming. Use at your own risk.
Eclectic Interlinks
This is our "Links Page" to sites that we recommend on a wide variety of subjects including:
The Arts: museums, galleries, works of art, dragons, theatre, operas, musicals, movies and television.
Downloads: power sites that lead to every download available, "must have" software recommendations, connections to a few web master programs that every designer should have, and interconnectivity developments that you need for safe, virus free, universal communication.
Intercultural: Links to places, languages, travel, foods, traditions, caves, waterfalls and the wonders of the world !
Intergalactic: The sciences, the universe and the truth that is out there!
Multimedia: Audio and Virtual Reality. This site connects to music, sounds, musicians, stores and radio stations. We also recommend a few links to multimedia sites that allow some pretty awesome effects... from watching a live David Bowie concert to wandering through a Virtual Reality museum, but you first must download and install the free "plug-ins" to be able to access, view or run them. Yes, we also tell you which ones are needed for each specific site and where to get them.
Library
Every serious student of life has to have a library and we are no exception to the rule! Our library includes links to online bookstores, stories, poetry, quotes, religions, philosophies, authors, Shakespeare, newspapers, magazines, and of course, other libraries.
Metzler Image Gallery
The Gallery hosts the original Metzler Angel photographs. The Gallery also leads to the Metzler and Shui Long Image Indexes which includes original and collected backgrounds as well as animations, arrows, backgrounds, balls, banners, buttons, and much, much more.
HomePage InterChange
This the location of the Personal PowerExchange. Come here to venture into web sites created by friends both Alaskan and worldwide, students of the UAS-S Internet, and PowerCerfers who wish to exchange their pages of knowledge. Here you will find a huge variety of sites from the professional: buying fresh Virgin Oysters or booking a fishing guide, to the beginners: everything from pets, family, and vacations to a veterinarian students daily journal. This is also the location of Rick and Sotera's Wedding. We encourage anyone seeking enlightenment and power through committment, to read their vows.
Who Is Shui Long?
Exactly what the title says... who is Shui Long and what does that name mean anyway? This section of the Cavern is a personal biography and reference for family, friends and clients. If you are looking for the photos from the latest reunion; if you need to buy nail, hand, feet or skin care supplies or book an appointment in the Perfect Ten Salon; if you are seeking information about American Red Cross classes, the Baranof Theatre Guild's latest productions, or the University of Alaska; come here. There's more, but we'll let you find that on your own.
Copyrights and Citings
So, you like something we've said and you want to cite it properly? You covet a Metzler image and you want to use it on your web page? You want more information on referencing for your college paper? You wish to reproduce portions of the Cavern? You think it's okay to lie to someone online about who you are, and say whatever you want to say with no consequences? This section helps to define what's right and what's not so right and a few of the consequences, whether you're working or playing on the Information Highway.
