Internet Workshops


Navigating in the World Wide Web

Introductory workshop for those who are already using their home or office computer and now want to begin learning about the Internet, starting with using one of the more "user friendly" services, navigating in the World Wide Web. The instructor will share the history and future of the Internet, general knowledge about the health and safety of the computer user and their equipment, and some basic terminology. Handouts will include information about the variety of basic services offered by several Internet providers, how to choose the right provider for your needs, and the basic hardware and software needed to connect to the chosen provider. The "hands on" exploration lets students experience what the web looks like from both a hypertext and hypermedia view and guides students on a journey into several World Wide Web "sites" including service providers, universities, teaching sites and simple search engines. Morning and evening sessions are the same. This class is a prerequisite for the advanced workship in Power Navigating in the World Wide Web.

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Computers or permission of instructor. (for permission of the instructor you must have basic keyboarding and mouse skills and the ability to navigate in your computer's program manager, ic.e. Windows, Mac, Win95, etc.)

Power Navigating in the World Wide Web

You will learn how to Power Navigate and Search the Internet using a variety of techniques and programs including: installing and opening (bookmark) files; searching Gopher Space using Veronica or Jughead; keyword searching using search engines such as Alta Vista and Yahoo; topical searches using power sites, Interlinks and Web-cities; and browsing using a variety of on-line cool and award sites. On-line programs, software and file downloads will be introduced as well customizing your browsers options for on-line safety and speed. Internet Connectivity programs such as Mirc and ICHAT discussion forums, the ICQ Personal Pager, the Tribal Voice Powwow program, used for multi-media conferencing, and 3-D On-Line worlds such as The BlackSun and The Palace will be displayed and discussed. Whether you are using the WWW for business, educational or personal reasons, this class will save you time in getting to the destinations of your choice! This training will deal with specific searches based on needs of participants and will familiarize you with how to initiate, compliment and complete your own research needs.

Pre-requisite: Navigating in the World Wide Web or permission of instructor.
Bring a blank, formatted 3.5 floppy disk to class for Bookmark files.
