Power Cerfing is wisely using your Web Browser options to Cerf in the fastest, cleanest, safest way possible.
Use your web browsers options to do the following:
Turn off the Images: If it's a well written site each image will have a name. If the name attracts you and you want to see the image you have the choice of clicking on the image or the image button to see it.
Turn off Java: If it's a well written site the page will run just fine without java and you should still be able to negotiate your way around. Of course, this means you might be missing some cool effects. But you will go faster. Some sites you just won't be able to run without it on. It then becomes a viewer choice: is the information or entertainment there is worth your taking the time?
Turn off Cookies: Okay, first of all - webmasters do not need to have all sorts of information about me, including my email address, thank you very much. I detest getting junk mail and cookies breed junk mail like crazy. I turn them completely off. If it's a well written site and it absolutely must have cookies turned on to run (such as a Yahoo Chat Room) it will tell me so and give me the option to turn the acceptance of them back on and return to the site. If I trust the site I most assuredly will.
And I'll remember to turn them right back off again the second I leave their domain.
Turn off Multimedia: I like my embedded music and shockwave movies just as much as the next person, but when I'm going for speed and information I don't want to get bogged down in the time exchange. If I'm working I don't need to have sound on disturbing my coworkers. If I'm using Library or Lab computers I usually don't have those options anyway.
Multi-Task. Browse with more than one window at a time. Open another browser
window by clicking File and then New Window,
and cruise away. For instance, in one browser window you are reading the site, in the other you are writing email using your web based email account and in a third you are patiently waiting a multimedia site to finish downloading.

Change the Bookmark Properties (such as the bookmarks name) if needed to remind you of what you liked in the site.
Keep a portable copy of your bookmarks on a floppy or zip disk. Take it with you when you visit other computers, such as going to the lab.

Clear Your Cache Often
Every time your graphical browser goes to a new URL it downloads every document, image, multimedia file, etc., and "caches" it in a folder. The next time you go to that same URL it seems to download faster. This is because it is reading from the stored cache and not downloading the site again. Unfortunately, this cache really builds up and steals memory, thus speed. Also, if a site was incorrectly written and/or crashes your system, this too is stored and can cause problems. As a webmaster if you are testing your java script, your applets, etc., you must clear your cache before being able to view any changes.
