   Early Travel Routes
The Natchez Trace - Nashville, Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi
showing some of the "stands" that developed before the 1830's

Overland Travel Cumberland Gap & Wilderness Road
Many people had come down the Holston River from southwest Virginia. They would enter East
Tennessee, then go northwest through the Cumberland gap, follow the Wilderness Road northerly into
central Kentucky. At Crow's Station, they would take the Kentucky Road westward. They followed the
road turned southward and they would finally arrive in the Cumberland Settlements. The end of the
road was French Lick, latter Fort Nashborough (1780), present day Nashville.

   River Travel
There were some who managed to get to French Lick via the river. From East Tennessee, they would
float West down the Tennessee River, around the "Big Bend" in today's Alabama, running the rapids
at Muscle Shoals, continuing NorthWest to the Ohio River. Then turning up the Ohio River to its
confluence with the Cumberland River, then with Cumberland upstream to French Lick.

A HISTORY OF HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE by W. Jerome D. Spence and David L. Spence

Page 98---------------

Drury Harrington was born in Chatham County, NC in 1788, came to Tennessee in 1809,
and settled near the large spring about one mile north of Little Lot. His wife was
Mary Mattocks, of Chatham County, NC, who was born in 1790. He died on August 10, 1844.
The children of Drury Harrington were:
   James (b.c1811)
Phillip (b. 1814) who married Martha Wilson, the daughter of
       Benjamin Wilson
   Miles (b.c1818)
   Calvin (b.c1820)
Sallie (b.c1824) who married Meredith Gossett of Mill Creek
Jane (b.c1825) who married William Malugin
Fannie (b.c1831) who married William Worley

The late Phillip Harrington was born on March 27, 1814.
At the age of 84 (1898)he was still strong and healthy, and lived at the place where
his father settled ninety years ago. He remembered when all around Little Lot was a
swampy wilderness through which wolves and panthers roamed. He recalled the fact that
the first clock he ever heard strike was the property of Hugh McCabe.

Drury Harrington's brothers, who came here about 1809, were:
Dempsey, Robert, and William. They were great hunters and trappers.

William Mattocks in 1809 lived near his brother-in-law Drury Harrington. He emigrated

To the question of where Hendon and Herndon were actually the same family....

"Excuse the interruption, but as information in the Little village of Stewart in
Houston Cop, which is just 2 miles from the Stewart/Houston County line, there
was a family of Hearndon, and brothers all spelled the name differently. One was
Herrington,,,one Herndon, another Hearndon and still another Hendon, consider
these were brothers, and believe it or not they were not angry with one another.

Personally came Thomas HARRINGTON before me George Crouch an acting J.P. and makes oath that he
was personally acquainted with Patrick Erwin before he enlisted in the service in the year 1814.
That he was a hale hearty man and witness served with him in camp beginning January 1814 and
closing last July of same year, were both in Captain McCray?'s Company, Tennessee Militia under
Gen. Doughtery, mustered into the service at Knoxville, Tennessee and marched to Lookout through
tract of Georgia and Alabama to Fort Struther and so on to the different parts to attack the
Indians and remained in service in that section of Alabama until the expiration of six months.
That the country was new, flat and marshy and the troops badly accommodated with camp exposed to
no comforts and from exposure said troops were many of them affected in their health and said
Patrick Erwin, his acquaintance being amongst the number and in addition to the loss of general
health said Patrick Erwin in the line of duty and service aforesaid in crossing a log on march,
fell and fractured or greatly injured his ankle so that he was unable to walk or bear weight,
thereon said Patrick Erwin fell in crossing a creek in Alabama after the troops were allowed to
march home to the town of Knoxville in order to be discharged and war was over. The said Erwin
fell on crossing a creek so injuring him as that he was compelled to lie bye and finally put on
a horse and in that way reached home. He then resided in said county with said Erwin and knew
his decline in health and appearance after his return home to the day of his death. Witness
knows that the officers are now all dead.

Wayne County was formed 1817 from Hickman County

Goodspeed's History of Wayne County, Tennessee 1886

The first settlers of Wayne County were mainly from the older counties of Middle Tennessee
and from North and South Carolina. The early settlements were made on North Carolina military
grants, occupants' claims and warrants.......Other settlers in different parts of the county
before 1820 were Jacob Biffle in the Eight District, where land was entered in 1812; David
Carter, assignee of Elizabeth Walker, also in the Eighth District; also William B. Ross,
Joseph Denton, Wiley Harrington, Thomas Reeves, J. W. Nunley, T. Gambel, Daniel Cherry,
Jacob Fraley, J. R. Russell, John Gibson and J. P. Walker.
About two miles below where Clifton now stands, formerly stood Carrollsville, named in honor
of Gov. Carroll. This place was founded in 1818 on the lands of Thomas Reeves. The sale of
lots began in 1821. At the time Reeves sold his interest to Johnson & Blackburn. Henry Mahon,
John Blackburn, Matthew Grimes, Henry Rayburn, Stephen Stubblefield, Jacob Spencer, Malachi
Wimberly, Chas. Harrington and John Elliott were principal property owners of the place.

Wilson County was formed in 1799 from portions of Sumner County.
County Seat is Lebanon.

Excerpts from THE GOODSPEED HISTORY OF WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE

At the close of the Continental war the State of North Carolina made grants of
large bodies of land to her soldiers in pay for service in time of battle.
The land so granted was situated in Tennessee, then a portion of North Carolina,
and it was by the owners of the land that Wilson (then Sumner) County was settled.
Names of some of those to whom land was granted between 1790 and 1800:

Samuel Barton 1,000 acres
Archibald Lytle 1,000 acres

Note: Agnes Harrington Conyer's daughter Jane married an Archibald Lytle Brown
1834 Wilson County, TN. He was probabaly a descendant of the Archibald Lytle
      above.

Lebanon was founded in 1802. Town lots were sold at public auction on the l6th of
August of the same year, among the purchasers being ...M. Stewart, William Crabtree,
John Impson......

Early store-keepers were.... Richard Bryan, Elisha Dismukes, Higdon Harrington and
David Martin, all of whose stores were located in various portions of the county
outside of the county seat.

NOTE: There was a Mary HERNDON b. 1731 who married an Elisha DISMUKES. Mary's Mother,
Sarah POE was from Chatham Co, NC. A number of her family moved to Logan Co, KY.
The above mentioned store-keeper might be a descendant of the elder Elisha
DISMUKES. [see also Kentucky page/Logan Co.]

The attorney-generals were Thomas Washington, 1810-18...

NOTE: Refer to Deeds of Lincoln Co, GA where in 1808 a Louise Harrington deeded to a
Drury Harrington any interest she had in the estate of a Thomas Washington. I
don't know if this is is the Thomas Washington referenced in that Georgia deed,
but thought I would note it anyway.

The business men of the sixties were... T. Harrington.

William and Fanny DYER sued THOMAS HARRINGTON for their
distributive share. The defendant is not an inhabitant
 of this state.
 Recorded March Term 1827.

NOTE: Thomas HARRINGTON b. 1760 NC who married Raynor HIGDON,
died 13 April 1824 Wilson Co, Tennessee (SOURCE: LDS FAMILYSEARCH™)
So this Thomas would probably have been his son, not residing in
       Tennessee in 1827.

Excerpted from THE GOODSPEED HISTORY OF WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Green COOK was born 1788 North Carolina. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. In 1814 he
married Mary A. NICHOLSON born 1787 North Carolina. Their son Lemual N. M. COOK was born
15 August 1815 in Wilson County, Tenn. Green Cook died in 1875 and his wife Mary died in
1853. [This is probably the Green B. Cook enumerated in the 1820/30/40 censuses and the
one who is listed on the muster rolls of Nixon's 13th Miss Militia during War of 1812.]
