North Henderson Ends North Rowan Run

RALEIGH -- After chasing North Rowan the last three years, North Henderson's boys finally won their own state title at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2-A track and field championships Friday at N.C. State.

North Henderson, the runner-up to North Rowan for three consecutive seasons, wrapped up the title in the 3,200-meter run when Shilo Mielke took first place (9:47.5) and John Henderson (10:10.95) took third. They earlier took first and second in the 1,600 with Mielke winning in 4:30.38 with Henderson finishing in 4:35.57.

Coach Jeff Roper's team finished with 86 points to North Rowan's 72. Northern Vance, which took third in both the boys and girls competition, scored 60 points.

North Rowan's girls, behind four first places by sophomore LaTasha Pharr, ran away with that title with 82 points, followed by West Wilkes (43) and Northern Vance (30).

While the North Rowan boys have won eight state titles and finished second seven times under Coach Robert Steele, this was the first girls outdoor title, Cavaliers coach Bryan Mills said. They also won the indoor championship this year.

"We knew we'd be the favorites coming in, but we also knew if we did our best that we'd be all right," Mills said.

Pharr, who won the 100-meters hurdles as a freshman, won the 100 hurdles (14.79), 300 hurdles (46.93), the triple jump (39-0) and the long jump (18-2).

North Henderson's boys received first-place finishes from Jason Green in the 100 (10.86) and 200 (22.49), Mielke in the 3,200 and 1,600, and Robbie Weast in the 800 (2:00.00).

"I just can't describe this," Roper said. "I figured if I was going to coach track I needed to talk to Coach Steele. And now I owe so much to him. He took the time to talk with me and really he pulled our team up to his team's level."

Said Steele: "If I had to lose I'd pick Coach Roper to be the one. He called and wrote and I figured if he wanted to come to Spencer and talk about North Rowan track and field that was fine. He's work really hard and they finally caught us, but we'll be back."

Northern Vance boys coach Randy Long thought his team had a shot at a state title until star sprinter Marcus Allen pulled a hamstring and his 4 x 100 relay team dropped the baton at the regionals last week.

The Northern Vance 4 x 200 team of Tyrell Mitchell, Carlton Jones, Allen and Sedrick Baskett took first place in 1:31.45 despite running in the slower heat.

The 4 x 400 team of A.R. Henderson, Allen, Quentin Jefferson and Mario Lucas also took first (3:29.87). Jason Brown entered the discus competition as the 11th seed, but threw a career-best 149 feet, 7 inches to take first.

"We got all we could out of those situations, but not having Marcus for the 100 and 200 and not having the other relay team really hurt," Long said. "I'm not happy with third place, but I'm happy with our performances." Jefferson finished second in both hurdles.

Bandys' Chris Douglas won both hurdles, winning each with the fastest reported times in the state this year. He ran the highs in 14.18 and the 300 intermediates in 38.44.

Northern Vance girls, behind Coach Wilton Baskett, took third with a squad containing one senior, pole vaulter Amy Miles, who finished second at 7-6.

Erin Johnson of Swansboro won the event at the same height.

It was the first year the girls pole vault had been contested at the state meet.

The Northern Vance relay team of sophomores Contella Crawford and Candace Faulkner, and juniors Donetta Floyd and Toccara Hargrove won the 4 x 100 and took second in the 4 x 200.

"With us losing just one senior of our squad of 25 I'd like to think we could be in the hunt for the title next year," Baskett said.

Tarboro pole vaulter Brian Pierce successfully defended his state championship with a 2-A state record vault of 14-10. He won last year when he vaulted 14 feet for the first time. His best in competition this year is 15-8.

"He's in the top 15 in the country," said his coach, Eric Morell. "What he did today wasn't bad for the conditions, cold and rainy. But Brian has come a long way."
