How to remove your airbag

Tools/materials needed

Disconnect the battery and any backup batteries (alarm) that are in the car and make sure there is no power anywhere for at least 5-10 minutes. Take a small flat head screwdriver and pry the plastic covers off the steering wheel on each side (be careful as the plastic is easily damaged!). On one of the covers that you pulled off to gain access to the torx screws should be a red clip. Remove that and have it near you and ready. Under the covers will be some big torx head screws on each side. Unscrew these and gently pull the airbag straight out as far as it will go until the wires in the back run out of slack. Now carefully unplug the wiring harness from the back of the airbag and replace the wiring harness with that red clip. This red clip is suppose to keep the bag from accidentally going off so don't skip this part!

If you're removing the airbag because it was already set off you don't need the clip. If you're replacing the bag, instalation is the reverse of removal. If you're putting on an aftermarket steering wheel, you will now have access to the main bolt holding on the factory steering wheel and it should be pretty obvious from here.

Now there's still one minor problem. When you start the car, there will be an "SRS" light on your dash that will not go out. If you're like me, it will drive you up the wall! I could not figure out how to make it go out so I had to "circumvent" it. First start off by removing the dash trim pieces around the gauge cluster. This will give you access to the screws that hold the gauge panel in place. Remove all the screws, pull it out slightly, disconnect the two wiring harnesses on the back of the panel and remove the entire assembly. Next you'll need to pop off the plastic cover (just a few snaps), pop off the little plastic "SRS" cover, then reach in with some long needlenose pilers and pull the little bulb out!

Note: If you want to keep your cruse control, you will need to relocate the wires and buttons for it. A small price to pay for that custom look, IMO!
