A trip to Kamakura, 11/1/98. Theresa and Lawson peruse the Lonely Planet guide on the train, while Cathy and Jonathan enjoy the view rushing by. At Engaku-ji, we watched several monks in training do some Zen-style archery. Here, two female monks start the dance, while this shot shows another monk in what looked like a contemplative state before taking up the bow. A male novice shoots at a target only 2 feet away in this indoor shot -- check out all the bows and arrows arrayed around him. Three of Kent's favorite photographic subjects show up here -- Kate, Theresa, and a gnarly tree in the background. Here Kate and Kent check out one of the smaller gates at Engaku-ji. This is the beautiful garden we were able to see behind the treasure house, and here's one of the 100 statues of Kannon in the garden. In the wildlife department, here's a real web -- festooned with a real spider! -- and here Kate captures three turtles sunning themselves in a pond. Kate meets a pond full of carp in this shot. Here's the huge gate moved to Kamakura from Kyoto at Kencho-ji, and this picture shows the 13th century bell that calls the monks to worship. More gnarly trees: the walk up to the main temple at Kencho-ji takes you past a grove of 700-year-old junipers. Here a shining goddess keeps watch over a garden. The Daibutsu serenely views the sunset, and here's a silhouette complete with moonrise. A great day.

A sunny weekend in late October …. At last! Kate cooks lunch (her favorite meal: a grilled cheese sandwich liberally laced with garlic). Sunday by the river: Colleen, Kate and Theresa munch on bento lunches as a baseball game goes on in the background. Kent and Colleen enjoy the day (note the bridges in the background for Route 246 and the Denen-toshi train line). Here's a closeup of the Denen-toshi train as it pulls into the Futako-Tamagawaen train station. Monday afternoon, Theresa's Japanese teacher, Maeguchi-san, plays with her furry pal, Hershey.

Volleyball season begins! Here are some pictures from Seisen Middle School's matches on 26 September, opening day of the 1998 season. The A team gathers for group photos: this one arrayed on a jungle gym, and this one stretched out along a balcony. While the B team played, the A team cheered them on. Here are a couple of pictures of Colleen's great serving form. Fortunately, the whir of the camera didn't bother her as she served an ace against Japan International School, and another against Christian Academy of Japan. It was early in the season, but here's what Colleen did with her best set of the day -- another point for Seisen. During a time-out, coach Daisy Davis (a Seisen graduate) encourages her team.

Wilkinsons in Aptos: A few shots taken in the condo rented by Dana and Teri in July 1998. Apologies for the lack of light on some of these; I hope to scan some printed photos in to augment this section soon. The Five Wilkinson Kids still fit on one couch (barely!). Colleen checks out the amount of available space on Auntie Robin's lap. Miss Photogenic, Emmy Boyd! Here Emily tries on a pair of swim goggles. Dana and Emily cuddle. Molly smiles for the camera, and Mitchell ponders that eternal question, "What is reality?" Dana wraps up a fun job, changing Heather's diaper, while Emily supervises.

Hiroshima and Miyajima trip: Kent guides Myrt and Bob (4/29). Taking full advantage of their JR passes, Myrt and Bob take a look at Hiroshima. Here's the cenotaph and dome, and here's a closeup of the cenotaph (the spot where the bomb was dropped) with the dome in the background. Myrt poses in front of the arch -- check out all the bouquets in the background. At the river, Myrt and Bob sit with the dome in the background. After several hours in Hiroshima, the threesome traveled down to Miyajima. From the boat, you can see the famous torii gate, and once ashore, Myrt is greeted by a tame deer. Here some deer help Myrt reload her camera, while Bob looks on. Kent and Myrt pose with the torii gate in the background, and here's what the gate looks like at low tide. This ferocious guard dog keeps evil spirits out of the temple. The azaleas are in full bloom, as you can see in this view of the temple and tori gate. Azaleas frame a shot of the pagoda too.

A trip to Kyoto and Nara with Myrt and Bob! (4/25-4/27) We had a great time riding the shinkansen and visiting many of the wonderful sights in the center of Honshu. We started off in Nara, where we each had a close encounter with some of the famous tame deer in the main park. Colleen feeds some, Kate bows, Grandbob does some more feeding, Myrt and a deer bow to one another, and Theresa strokes some antlers. Once we ran the deer gauntlet, we visited Daibutsu, home to an enormous statue of Buddha. Kent, Colleen and Kate get ready to go inside the temple. The kids and Theresa made a donation to the temple restoration fund, so we got to decorate a roof tile (here it is completed) that will soon be installed. The next day, Sunday, we saw some of Kyoto's famous sights. First stop, Kiyomizudera, a beautiful building that inspired many American architects earlier this century (Arts and Crafts, anyone?). It's a great spot for photos, as you can see by checking out five travelers in front of the main gate, Colleen and Kate on the deck outside the main temple, Theresa pausing to look at the valley view, and the Gang of 6 on the deck with the temple behind us. One ritual that's part of a temple visit is purifying oneself with water; in this shot, Colleen, Theresa, Kate and Myrt rinse away their impurities. Nearby on a path, small stone Buddhas are dressed by their devotees. At Kennon-in, Colleen, Theresa and Kate get inspired by a large Buddha. After lunch, we went across town to Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion. Myrt, Colleen and Theresa enjoy the view of the golden structure. We saw many animal friends in the water: here are some carp looking for a meal, and in this shot, a pile of turtles suns on a rock. Colleen and Kate stand under a bright red torii gate. Here Myrt captures a scene that will probably turn into a painting someday soon. Just down the road is Ryoanji, with its peaceful rock garden. Here's the group (in the shadows off to the right) contemplating the garden, and in this shot, Colleen and Kate are transformed by their meditation. Monday morning, Myrt, Bob and Theresa visited Nijo-jo, but didn't get any photos on disk. (Will try to scan a few later.) Our last tourist stop was Ginkakuji, the Silver Pavilion, even though it's not really silver as you can see in this view from across the rock garden. (The builder, grandson of the Golden Pavilion creator, just never got around to it.) The gardens at Ginkakuji are beautiful though, as is the view from the top of the walk. Theresa takes a rest in front of the pavilion.

Aikido Promotion Ceremony. Colleen and Kate both took aikido lessons starting last fall. On 18 April, they were both given their first belts! Here's their instructor, Tony-Sensei (what a guy!). Colleen warms up by whacking her foot. Here Colleen throws Tony, something they both enjoy very much. And this is Colleen's reaction to a unique honor: she got promoted to the second belt, Orange Belt, rather than the first after just one year of study. Six other members of Colleen's class got promoted this year, and here's the whole group with their current belt colors. Kate was in a beginner level class; here she and Jessica do some rolling warm-ups. Kate enjoys throwing big people around -- here she throws Miwa-sensei, and here she flips Tony-sensei across the room. Pal Jessica gets her yellow belt, and here Kate bows after receiving her yellow belt. Kate and Jessica's class poses after all the brand-new yellow belts are tied. Kate and Jessica show off their belts (Colleen had already changed out of her outfit -- too bad!).

Kate hunts for Easter eggs, finding one outside (note the egg still in the palm tree behind her) and another in the dining room. Drink up!

Thailand! What a great spring break trip this was (3/29-4/4). You should plan your trip to Phuket right away (bring money). Here's how relaxed Teri and Kent got after a week of sun and boat drinks. And here's how Kate spent most of the week: with her swim goggles on, ready to jump back in the pool. We got attacked by the ladies in pink coats and forced to get our hair braided and beaded: Here Colleen gets her braids, and this is Kate going through it. Colleen's braids were very elaborate: here's a front view and here's the back. Her friend Jessie counted 98 braids!! (I lost track about 40, but it could have been the rum in my system.) The ladies even got Theresa braided. Elephant rides! Kate and Theresa on an elephant, 2 big rears and one little one. Here Teri takes a picture of Kent from one elephant to the other as he takes a picture of her … you know how that goes. And here Kate, Colleen and Theresa reward an elephant with some bananas. A view from the truck en route to the elephant ride: a motorbiker follows us down a busy street. There were motorcycles EVERYwhere. Kate gets ready to give the elephants a bucket of bananas. Kate and Theresa enjoy the beach where we went snorkling on Wednesday. As we left the snorkling beach, a classic Thai longboat passed by. Colleen, Kate and Theresa rest up in the boat on the way back to Phuket Island from the snorkling trip. Kent and Colleen wrap up a jet ski adventure -- take note of Kent's blown-back hairstyle. Here's a view from the pool across the lagoon at the Sheraton … vacation heaven.

Our trip to Hakone, 2/12-2/13. We stayed in a ryokan, which had to be reached via gondola. Upon checking in, we were given "gondola cookies." Kate ate hers with a cup of tea. Then it's off to the bath! We shared an outdoor soak and enjoyed it a lot. Here's Kate, Colleen and Kent soaking, and Theresa jumps in too. Our room had a beautiful garden that Kate loved. Dinner was a feast! Here it is being set up as our maid fills up the shabu-shabu pots, then makes sure everything is just so. Yukatas can fit anyone, as this picture of three females of varying sizes illustrates. Out in front of our ryokan, Colleen, Kate and Theresa pose with fish and a blooming tree.

Mt. Fuji rising over Lake Ashino. Here Colleen and Kate check out Mt. Fuji.

Sestubon -- "Bean Throwing Ceremony" on 2/3/98. This is the traditional last day of the Japanese year, which is celebrated by casting the devils out of your house by throwing roasted soybeans at a representative. Kate made the mask, and Kent played the devil. Here he is at the bottom of the steps, and a short time later the girls chased him out onto the street!

Hanging around the house … Kate and Tessa - a portrait of best friends (1/24/98). Here they dance around the living room and try to avoid breaking things…. Hershey wags his tail while hanging out in his favorite spot -- Kate's bed. (1/24) …. Kate tries to cheer up a sick Colleen. (1/25) (She's all better now!)

It snowed! Here's what it looks like around our house after 12 hours of snow. These pictures were taken on 1/9 and 1/15, following Tokyo's heaviest snowfall in about 20 years. (Hey, we S.F. Bay Area natives don't see this sort of thing very often.)  Kate goes sledding down the street.  Theresa and Kate and two useless bicycles. Colleen created a snow tunnel just under the mailbox. Here she shows it to our neighbor, Risa.  Hershey guards our snow-covered abode. Across the courtyard to our neighbor's steps (the sames ones show in the "view out my office window" picture, below.)  The palm tree in the garden, adorned in white fluffy stuff.  Our car, covered in snow at 4PM 1/8. It'll stay in the driveway for a while.  And at 7:30PM on 1/8 … the kids built a Snow Thing.  The front of the house after 7 hours of snow. Colleen likes the leafless trees adorned with natural flocking. Colleen and Risa (the 5-year-old across the courtyard) building a snow slide.  Here's a good shot of how much snow we got: the table in the garden covered with untouched fluff. (9AM 1/9) As if the snow wasn't exciting enough … a house about 30 feet from ours caught on fire around noon. Here are a couple of shots of firefighters performing acts of derring-do in keeping the neighborhood from burning up. Back at the ranch, Kate shovels the walk.

Here we have some pictures of what's going on in Japan.

Here are two shots are of a small fraction of Colleen and Kate's "Print Club" collections. Be warned, they take a while to load. Here's one batch, and here's another . They're very amusing! You can start your own collection by visiting us soon!

This picture was taken of the four of us the day we wandered around Harajuku … possible Christmas card quality, don't you think? The kids look pretty cute in their uniforms -- at least their old Mom thinks so. Here's Kate about to head off to her first day of school. In this shot, Colleen and Kate are at the piano. Relaxing after school, Colleen, Jessica, Kate and Hershey lounge around in our living room. Our neighbors across the street pose with a gaggle of gaijin. Kate cheerfully does the dishes -- with Daddy's help. Colleen and Kate concoct musical instruments; they're sitting at the kitchen counter and you can see our "Tokyo Resource Center" pasted to the wall behind them. Here's the aftermath of a thrilling video: the kids snoozing with Ookah. And here's something that's going fast with every trip to the grocery store.

You've just moved to Japan! Where ya gonna go? We're going to Disneyland! (Here's the letter describing the day.) Here are a few pix from our visit on 10/13. The classic group pose in front of the castle. Yoshiha, Jessica, Azumi and Colleen on the train from Oimachi to Tokyo station, way too early in the morning. Jessica, Colleen, Azumi and Kate try on some goofy hats … Kate ended up buying the one Azumi is wearing Yoshiha and Azumi flying on the rockets, with Colleen close behind.

A visit to Seisen: The third grade chorus belts out "Rubber Ducky" during the Seisen festival, and a close-up of Kate. Colleen is in line to get her lunch in this shot; the middle school and high school kids didn't have to wear uniforms the day I took this picture because it was "Spirit Day." And here's Kate in line to get her lunch, about 25 minutes later. This is Kate's teacher, Maeve Chambers -- now does this look like a teacher you'd expect to see at a Catholic school? Here's Kate and two of her pals -- Jee Hyun from Korea and Solene from France. This picture isn't technically taken at Seisen, but here's Colleen with her volleyball team just as they took the court for their match with Japan International School.

Weekend in Tateyama: Taking the ferry from Yokosuka to the Chiba peninsula. Kate finds a frog outside the lodge. Here's the rice field in which the lodge was set. My favorite picture of the weekend: Kate and Tessa playing in the surf. Colleen and Kate in the process of constructing a sand … well, sculpture, I guess. Colleen, Kate and Jonas examine a tide pool. Kate and Tessa enjoy the view from the lighthouse in this shot, while Colleen and Kate goof around on a garbage can here. All the bikers gather before our Sunday morning outing.

Are you concerned about Theresa's working conditions? Here's a shot of her office -- please note that you can still see what color the rug is. And this is the view out the office window … very soothing and a good antidote to writer's block. If you'd like to buy me lunch, here's a suggestion.

Family Fun back in the U.S.!! Here's my niece and nephew collection. Clay grimaces for the camera at Chevy's. Here's Heather sitting in one of her favorite laps. Grandbob is entertaining Clay, Kenny and Kate in this shot at his birthday gala. Dusty receives a special shipment from Mexico on his birthday. Colleen and Kate laugh it up with Molly during our 11/96 visit to Scottsdale over Thanksgiving. Stephanie looks great wearing a dress that Granmyrt made for Kate! And here's Stephanie working on the Halloween pumpkin 10/97. I'll hire her next year!

My brother Bob and his wife Lee welcomed Miss Monica Lee Wilkinson into the world just two days after we moved to Japan. He sent me these pictures of her dated late September .. what a cute smile! And doesn't Daddy look sleepy here? Thanks to a shipment of .JPGs from Bobby on 10/27, I have a few more Monica pix, dating from mid-October: Here's Mom holding Monica, Aunt Lillian holding Monica, Robin holding Monica, Diana holding Monica, and Norman comforting Monica while Bobby feels her pain. Glen and Clay pose with Kristen while Bobby and Lee hold Monica. I get to meet Baby Monica in early November; here I'm holding Kristin while Bobby cuddles Monica. This kid gets around! Go hold her sometime; you may wind up with a picture on this page too. (I need to scan in pix of Mitchell and Emily still!)

Some photos from Dusty and Jennifer's wonderful wedding on July 12 … here the happy couple pose with their Wilkinson aunts and uncles … and Mom too. And here's a happy trio: three of the lucky guys married toWilkinson women. (More to come in this section.)

Myrt and Bob celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary by being kidnapped and whisked away to Calistoga. Here they are enjoying the Calistoga Spa and Hot Springs Resort, and in this picture they check out a Calistoga-created cake. I got to meet Baby Monica in early November; here I'm holding Kristin while Bobby cuddles Monica. (Pictures taken during Theresa's 11/97 trip to the U.S.)

Moving is more fun that anyone could possibly imagine. Here's a picture of Kate sorting through stuff in the family room, while in this picture Myrt and Marge admire the new carpet. Theresa and big sister Robin take a break from listening to Dusty's band in this shot. And this is a sad shot: Hershey arriving at quarantine near Narita. Colleen and Myrt take a break from moving to pick mulberries and make a mess! Dawn, Steve and Paul look happy at the Sayonara Party … why are they smiling??

Dogs will have their day. Here's Dolly engaged in one of her favorite activities: watching television. (I think I should send this picture to David Letterman for Stupid Pet Tricks… what do you think?) In this shot, Dolly is watching herself on television! Here Hershey lounges in the ivy at Dawn and Steve's place, looking like the prince of a pooch that he is. You can teach an old dog new tricks and here's Hershey's latest: shaking hands. And here's what Hershey does if you ask him, "Would you rather go to Stanford or be a dead dog?"

These photos were taken at the Lair of the Bear (Camp Blue Week 10! Be there!) the night a few of us decided, for some reason, to sing "Teenager in Love" with a 90s theme. The performers will remain unlabeled in this photo to protect what's left of their reputations. Here's a shot of some of our fans in the stands. Lookin' good, Laurie!

OK Sports Fans … here are a few shots of last spring and summer's softball action in Palo Alto. About 10 minutes before this picture was taken, the Palo Alto Firefighters American Girl team -- coached by Yrs Trly -- won the citywide tournament. This is Colleen, Coach T. and ace shortstop/catcher Sarah smiling with the first place trophies. (Yes, I brought mine to Japan.) Colleen made the Bobby Sox 2A All-Star team (age 12 and under) last summer -- here's the team during a break in practice. This is the way you learn to slide hands-first, a fun technique. And here's Colleen's All-Star baseball card. Few are in circulation; this is very valuable!

I love to fly!. Here I am piloting Cutlass 6307R. The first shot was taken by my instructor, Mary Ellen Carlin, on my mountain checkout in April 1997. The next one was taken by my friend Pat Murray as I stopped to pick her up in Oakland in July 1997. Colleen is sitting in the plane. Pat also took this picture out the window as we flew from Oakland to Davis. Colleen likes flying too … here she is on graduation day at NASA Space Camp in June.

Oldies but goodies: our 1987 Christmas card photo, featuring Colleen at age 2 and her great big smile. Flip ahead to 1989 and a photo taken about the time of Kate's 1st birthday -- Colleen is 4 1/2 in this picture. Less than a year later, this is Kate brandishing a set of Dracula teeth in one of my favorite photos. The Wilkinson kids pose as "Children of the Highway Patrol" in this shot from about 1991 (Dana borrowed Colleen's sunglasses for this one). Menorca was the site of a week of fun in summer 1994; here's Mom and the four of us perched above the beach at Cala Mezquida.

These photos are antiques! Check out the five Carey kids in 1959 in this Christmas card shot. Here's a photo of the Ciprian shop in Chicago sometime in the 1930s; that's Myrt on her mother's lap in the foreground.

This is the view of Jimmy Buffett I had from my 5th row center seat in October 1995. I was just a pirate looking at 40 ...

Careys are everywhere … here's Carey Street in London in a photo taken by Aunt Dorothy.

More to come ...
