What was your position on service before you took this class?

I never really had any opinion on service, I had never really been involved with it or thought about it at all.

What is your position on service now?

I think service is fine as long as it’s not required.  I’m not like a superfan of it or anything, but I don’t see anything wrong with it.

How do you imagine service fitting into your future life, if at all?

No clue.

What were some of the useful sources about service you will use?

My mom has a whole folder of articles and such about service learning that she has collected, and I will probably use some of that.

From Writing for Change:

From our text (SOC or CY):
Well, since the whole book is about service, probably the whole thing.  Maybe the chapter about burnout.

From Your Service Project:
The fact that the main reason I actually thought my service was fun is because it was on my own time.  If I wanted to leave, I left, and I was there because I wanted to be.

From the DC:

From your other reading:
I liked the article that my mom has about new standards, and required service and all that.

From Central Station:

From the Speakers (if on-campus):

What is your Key Idea for this essay? What are you arguing about service?

Service is a positive experience, except when required.  When service is required, it defeats the main purpose.

What background information can you supply about your thesis?

My grades in school, my piano lessons, my cub scouts.  I stopped taking lessons cuz I didn’t want to learn under pressure, not because I didn’t like playing the piano.  I quit cub scouts because we were forced to do book work.  And as for school, I find it difficult to do things that are “required” of me, for example homework.
