Xena and Gabrielle just finished shopping in an Athens market when they come across three dead children on the road to Compera, the temple of a eastern demon defeated by the heroic sailor Sinbad and his samurai friend Tetsu. The temple is on an island near the port and they have been welcomed by a friend named Krus.
Krus was a merchant who is now working at the temple where he plans to open a barding school and he wants Gabrielle to be at its opening. Xena and Gabrielle talk about her barding skills and Xena is impressed with Gabrielle’s tellings of all the adventures she's heard and had.
The ship sets sail and in three days they arrive at the seaside port of Taron on the island of Veronia. Xena and Gabrielle walk threw the forest on the road which stopped at the port near Athens. Both are tired and decide to rest for the night.
During the night, there are sounds of death coming from the nearby mountain which hold the temple of Compera. Gabrielle thinks she hears something in the middle of the night, but its all a dream she says and she falls back to sleep.
The next morning, Xena wakes Gabrielle and discovers tracks of blood going from the burned out fire to a shed. Xena kicks down the door and discovers four dead men laying down with blood all over them and swords sticking out of their heart and both eyes.
Gabrielle vomits and Xena begins to get worried. Gabrielle remembers hearing something but she is not sure. Xena and Gabrielle grab there bags and head to the small village where they meet Krus. Krus hugs Xena and kisses Gabrielle on the hand and shows them a small inn where they will stay. The owners name is Jake and he is a young and strong man who is quick to make a smart comment about Xena, leading Xena to superkick him and leave him down for a nap.
Krus explains that lately there have been problems on the island and its seems that after Sinbad defeated Compera many months back, everything went from bad to good and good to worse and so on.
"This murder spree has continued for a week now and the people are worried", explains Krus to Xena and Gabrielle.
Xena asks about the bard school and Krus explains that the school was just a joke and he wanted Xena to come and help him discover the evil. Xena agrees and she tells Gabrielle to stay at the inn. Gabrielle agrees to do so and tells Xena to be safe.
The next afternoon, Krus and Xena head to the empty temple and arrive to find nobody there. Once inside the temple, they meet a woman named Methana. She’s a priestess and explains that she was a follower of Compera but decided to leave his evil cult and is now on her own. They take her to the village and head for the swamps where killers like to hang out.
Krus explains to Xena that many believe the killer of Compera’s spirit or his followers who hated to see him be destroyed.
The swamp was empty and nobody was there so Xena headed back to the town. Xena slept that night and the next morning, Jake was dead on a table with a sword threw his eyes and blood all over the table, floor and chairs. Outside the inn, forty dead men and women laid with a river of blood on the streets. One woman walked by and didn’t even care as she laughed.
Xena was shocked but Gabrielle didn’t care either and said she was going to the market since there was nothing to do here. The market was in the next town and Xena followed and asked Gabrielle if anything strange happened the afternoon before.
Gabrielle said she didn’t care and did not really think about that. She continued to walk and Xena pushed her down and placed the pinch on her and began to yell and smack her in the face.
Gabrielle began to get a red face and leaped up and took Xena down with a brutal fist to the face and began to choke Xena with a rope. Gabrielle was so angry, that she grabbed a knife and almost stabbed Xena until Xena kicked Gabrielle off. Xena and Gabrielle laid hurt and both soon fell to sleep.
They awoke the next morning in the village among the bloodbath and dead bodies. Gabrielle was sore and Xena told her that the villagers must have thought they where dead.
Xena told Gabrielle that she only stunned her with the pinch and Gabrielle’s anger must have forced her to break the small sting. Nobody was alive in the town for some reason as the hundreds of people who lived there where all dead and blood laid.
Methana was awake and was somehow alive still. She seemed not to care about anything and Gabrielle and Xena also did not care about anything at all except one thing and that was to kill everything in sight.
Krus was also found dead and they seemed not to care about how he died or why.
Methana stated she was proud and told Gabrielle and Xena that they had fulfilled Compera’s work and he could return through the bodies of pure evil and he would return. She took them to the temple of Shangri the elder, who was a dwarf man with a long beard and a oriental look. He was another priest of Compera and wanted to bring his lord back to life.
Gabrielle was given a cape to wear and Xena was placed on an altar with a giant red helmet implanted in it. Gabrielle was given an order to stab Xena threw the heart and seemed not to care why she was doing it or why she needed to do it. Xena slept peacefully and smiled threw it all as Gabrielle plunged the knife into her heart and she died with her blood all over Gabrielle’s hand.
Methana placed her hand in the air and a light shined on it and into Xena’s mind and Xena arose with a red helmet on and a giant scar on her body.
Gabrielle was told to lay down and Shanghi did the same thing to Gabrielle. Gabrielle appeared with a red helmet and Shanghi whispered to Methana that both would be the first of the new seven demons of Compera and would bore children for him, to serve Compera.
Xena and Gabrielle where sent to the next village where they would be told to kill everyone and take the alive bodies of two strong warriors that lived there. But before they could leave, Krus ran in and said he faked a death to save Xena and Gabrielle. Krus stated that he saw Methana place curses on victims and kill people and refused to stop knowing her would die. He stated he was a sorcerer and could allow everyone to live again but would need to kill Methana and Shanghi to bring forth good again.
Gabrielle charged Krus with a sword and Krus quickly spinkicked Gabrielle away and dropped Xena on her back and tossed Gabrielle into a nearby table. With Gabrielle and Xena running towards him, he charged up a fireball and swung it at Shanghi. It struck Shanghi and killed him. He leaped over the women and came face to face with Methana who quickly stabbed him with a knife in the heart but as he fell he stabbed Methana with a sword threw the heart and both died.
Gabrielle and Xena fell and became normal again. Xena and Gabrielle hugged and Xena thanked a dying Krus, who just wanted to save his town. Xena and Gabrielle arrived back in Veronia where everything was normal and before they left, they placed a bomb found in an inventors shop on the island and blew up the temple making it ruins and buried Krus’ body near the shore, making the island new name "Krus" in memory of the man who helped save it. Xena and Gabrielle boarded the ship and headed back to Greece.
