2"Many studies state that infants cry 'an average of two or three hours each day.' I urge parents to beware of drawing any conclusions from these studies of crying. These studies, which are widely quoted, often conclude that it is normal for babies to cry two to three hours a day. I do not personally believe this. In my own practice and personal experience I would certainly not consider it normal for babies to cry two to three hours a day. The reason I caution parents about putting much faith in these studies is that I don't want parents to conclude that it is all right to let their baby cry two to three hours a day. The mothers in these studies were not given any counseling about what to do when their babies cry and were not specifically advised to use all possible mothering skills to keep their babies from crying. In cultures in which an immediate nurturing response is the normal response to an infant cry, the amount of crying is reported in terms of minutes, not hours."
