A New Dawn

History Class

Dia sat in front of the computer, munching on the sandwich she had made for her lunch the night before. You weren't allowed to eat in the computer lab, but the teacher who supervised it during lunchtime knew her well and trusted her not to get crumbs in the keyboard or anything like that. After all, he saw her at lunch almost every day. Dia really didn't have any reason to eat lunch in the cafeteria, because she didn't have any friends to sit with. She felt it was more constructive just to work in the computer lab, or, if she had nothing to do, Dia would go to the library and read.

But today she had work to do; she was online researching for her term paper. It really was an interesting topic. She couldn't comprehend how people could ever be suckered into believing some of this stuff, it was so unbelievable, and so much of it was based of blind faith. Come to think of it, Dia could barely comprehend how people survived before the Nega Wars. Everything was so chaotic, so unpredictable. Now life was organized and efficient, just the way Dia liked it. Sure, it could be boring sometimes, but, well, you get used to it.

The bell rang loudly and startled her. Dia was surprised that she had been daydreaming. I usually have no problems concentrating, she thought. She collected her things and headed to her next class, history. It's nothing, she told herself. You were just staring at that computer for too long.

Dia walked into the classroom and sat down in the front row. She took out her history book and notes and waited patiently for the second bell to ring.

". . . Amanda Ollins . . . Matthew Preston . . . Stanley Reinhart . . . " her teacher called as he took role, each followed by the expected reply from the student. ". . . Lydia Shelly . . . "

"Here," Dia replied mechanically after she heard her name. She hated being called Lydia, but it was proper procedure to call out the student's full name when checking attendance.

"Okay, class," the teacher said after he had finished. "Now that we have finished the time period before the Nega Wars and all of you are working on your term papers, today we are going to continue to the Nega Wars themselves. Can anyone tell me who fought in the Wars?"

Dia raised her hand immediately.

"Ms. Shelly?"

"The Nega Wars were fought between Her Highness Queen Metallia and a group of teenage girls who called themselves the Sailor Scouts."

"Very good. Can someone else tell me who the leader of these Sailor Scouts was? Mr. Andrews?"

"Sailor Moon."

"Very good. I know that you all know a lot about the Nega Wars, so I am going to cover them very rapidly. If you need me to slow down, raise your hand."

Dia gripped her pen tightly, poised to take notes quickly. She really didnÍt need to take them, though. Studying the Nega Wars was a hobby of hers, and she knew almost everything about them.

"The wars began when Queen Beryl began to collect energy from humans in order to unleash the Negaverse . . . "

Dia stopped listening to the teacher and began to wonder what it must have been like to live during the Wars. She had been born shortly after they ended, and she was often curious about what life was like before that. The inhabitants of Tokyo must have been afraid of the yumas and droids that were sent down by Queen Beryl and the others that come after her, because they did not yet understand how beneficial the Negaverse was. They might even have viewed the Sailor Scouts as heroes, when they were in reality just meddling teenagers that only delayed the Nega Revolution. They were fools to think that they could ever conquer Her Highness Queen Metallia, that they could ever really kill her. When she was resurrected, she caught them with their guard down and defeated them easily. And then there was the Revolution, the New Order . . .

"Ms. Shelly?"

"What?" Dia was jolted back into reality. "I'm sorry Mr. Dougin, what was the question again?"

The class snickered and Dia turned bright red. What was wrong with her, drifting off in class?

"I asked, what happened to the Sailor Scouts after they were defeated?" the teacher said with an extremely annoyed look on his face.

"They were all executed for treason," Dia replied, thankful that she knew the answer.

"Correct. Now---"

Mr. Dougin's lecture was cut short by the bell that signaled the end of school. All of students filed neatly out of the classroom. Dia went to her locker and got the books that she need for homework. She was still felt horribly embarrassed and disappointed in herself about what had happened in class. I better head straight home and study, she thought. This can't happen again tomorrow.

Dia almost ran out of the school so that she could get home as soon as possible. She walked quickly with her head down, still turning over in her mind the events in her history class. She had only gone a couple of blocks, however, when she heard screaming. She looked up to see a huge crowd of people fleeing for their lives.

"What's going on?" she asked a woman whose arm she had managed to grab. The woman was in hysterics, and couldn't speak but only point wildly. Dia looked in the direction she was indicating and was so shocked at what she saw that she dropped the woman's arm. The woman scrambled away. Dia just stared at what she saw. It looked like a woman, but its features were discolored and she was wearing a bizarre outfit that made her look like some kind of giant lizard.

"I am Dragonia, would you like to play with fire?" the creature hissed before spewing fire out of her mouth and into a crowd of people.

Dia turned to run, but then she saw the cat she had seen that morning bounding towards her, holding something strange in its mouth.
