David Wong :FRAMED

Who is David Wong?

David Wong is a Chinese national who came to the U.S. in the early 1980's. David is one of three children, who live with their mother in Hong Kong.

On June 1984, David was imprisoned in Suffolk County, NY for a minor crime of theft, his first and only criminal offense, and transferred to the Clinton Correctional Facility (CCF) in Dannemora, NY.

On March 12, 1986, an inmate, Tyrone Julius wa stabbed to death. On the order of the tower guard, over 100 yards away, David Wong was immediately apprehended. At the time, David could not speak English well, could hardly converse with the other inmates, and had never associated with the victim. David was not in the immediate proximity where the stabbing occurred.

However, in August of 1987, David was convicted of murdering Tyrone Julius and sentenced to prison for second degree murder.

David was an easy target for a frame-up. He spoke little English, was unfamiliar with the legal system, did not know his rights and had no family or friends in the U.S.

David has maintained his innocence to this day and has actively participated not only in his own defense but has supported political cases as well. He has vastly improved his knowledge of the English language and has written letters to Presidents Bush and Clinton, former Governor Cuoma, and to numerous prisoner and human rights groups.

David is now serving his time at the Auburn Correctional Facility in Upstate New York. He works daily in the prison workshop, and occupies himself with reading and other activities. His main interests are philosophy, meditation, religion, Zen, physics and psychology.

FACTS ABOUT DAVID'S CASE

Despite overwhelming evidence in support of his innocence, David was still convicted of a crime he did not commit. He received incompetent legal representation from an attorney who was indifferent to him and his case. Furthermore:

David was apprehended minutes after the stabbing. The medical examiner testified that the wounds on Tyrone were so deep that the attacker's clothes would have the victim's blood soaked into them. No blood was found on David's body or clothes.

No murder weapon was ever found.

The tower guard who was 100 feet away from the incident presumably recognized David from over 800 inmates similarly dressed.

Many Black and Hispanic inmates offered to testify that David did not commit the murder, yet they were not called to testify at the trial.

Tse Kin Cheong, a former inmate, was with David at the time of the murder and testified that David was innocent. He was misrepresented by the prosecution, preventing the jury from understanding David's defense.

The State did not provide a skilled translator who spoke the same dialect as David, raising much doubt to the authenticity of the translated statements represented as evidence in his trial.

Tyrone Julius had been transferred to the prison only two weeks before he was murdered. David never met Tyrone.
