Instructions on Using Authorware 4 Interactive Programs

Interactive courseware modules, games and fun programs made with Macromedia's Authorware 4 are now available at this site. To access these programs, please follow the instructions below:

The programs are available in a zipped form. When unzipped, you will be able to extract program files with the extension .a4r. These can be run using one of the following programs which are also available in zipped form:

runa4w16.exe (for Windows 3.1 etc)

runa4w32.exe (for Windows95, NT and 98)

Some features of the programs (sound, images etc) require some extra files which are available in separate folders for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 and later versions. These files must be downloaded, unzipped and saved in a folder named xtras. The xtras folder must be placed in the same folder where all other authorware programs are saved.

A. Instructions for Windows 3.1 Users

  1. If you are a Windows 3.1 user, first download ziprun16.zip and unzip this. You should be able to extract the file runa4w16.exe. Extract this into a folder in your main (c) drive. It is advisable to save all authorware files and datafiles in one folder. Please name this folder apw. You should now have the following file C:\apw\runa4w16.exe
  2. Now download xtrazip16.zip and unzip and extract the files A3sread.x16, Bmpview.x16, Mix16.x16, Mixview.x16 and Viewsvc.x16 into a new folder which must be named xtras. This new folder must reside in the same folder/directory as all other files. So, you should now have a folder c:\apw\xtras containing the five files: A3sread.x16, Bmpview.x16, Mix16.x16, Mixview.x16 and Viewsvc.x16.
  3. Now select the application program you want and download the zipped file and unzip to extract. anyname.a4r. This must be saved in the same directory/folder where all other files and the xtras folder reside. This means you must save this in c:\apw. If you find any .txt files when you unzip the archive, save the anyname.txt files also in the directory c:\apw
  4. To use the program double click c:\apw\runa4w16.exe and in the dialogue box, select c:\apw\anyname.a4r. Then follow the instructions on the screen.

C. Macintosh/Unix Users

At present the I do not have the Macintosh runtime files. The programs could be made to run directly on Netscape/ Explorer using shockwave technology, but Geocities have not given me permission to keep shocked authorware files (.aam and .aas files) at this site. I hope to be able to do this in the future.
