Albert E. Bigelow was born in Redford, Michigan on July 13, 1840. He was the son of William C. and Sarah A. (Prindle) Bigelow. Young Albert was educated in the "district schools of Wayne County".
Albert Bigleow enlisted in Company I on July 26, 1862 at Detroit. A He was one of the first men to join the new regiment. He was immediately assigned the rank of sergeant. t the time of his enlistment he was working as a bookkeeper in Detroit. He was mustered into federal service on August 14, 1862, He was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863,
After returning to his regiment he was appointed the First Sergeant of his company. During the fighting in the Wilderness on May 5, 1863 poor Albert was again wounded in the leg. This wound must have been more severe; Albert Bigelow was discharged from service on November 11, 1864 at Detroit. The cause listed was "disability".
After the war, Albert He entered the retail lumber business by at least 1868. It appears that he was quite successful. He continued in the lumber trade until 1897 when he retired, reportedly to "devote his attention to private real estate and other interests."
In 1882, Albert married Miss Lydia Houk in Marquette, Michigan..
In later life, Albert Bigelow was listed as a Republican. It is uncertain what his political affiliation was at the time of the Civil War. Likewise in 1908 he indicated that he was Baptist, although he ,ay have come to that faith late in life..
Albert was quite active in the Grand Army of the Republic and was a member of the Detroit Post # 384. He attended Michigan Day at Gettysburg in 1889. He was also an active Mason in the Detroit Commandery No. 1, and a Knight Templar.
According the Book of Detroiters, in 1908 Albert was retired, although he still maintained an office at: 511 Hammond Bldg. His residence at that time was listed as 821 Northwest Blvd.
