Like many of the company C men, Alfred Courtrite was a native of New York. During the summer of 1862, he was working as a farmer in Plymouth. He enlisted in company C August 5, 1862 at Plymouth. He was 20 years old. He mustered into federal service with the rest of his company on August 15, 1862.
Alfred was wounded in the thigh at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Apparently the wound was quite severe or there complications, as the State Adjutant General lists Alfred as absent sick from July 1863 through January 1864. Alfred was transferred to Invalid Corps February 15, 1864. Alfred Courtrite was discharged at Elmira, New York, July 14, 1865 as corporal from Company G, 1st Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps. This unit was assigned to guard duty at the infamous Elmira Prison
