Able Lobdell enlisted in the 24th Michigan on March 27, 1865, and was mustered into service the same day. His term was to be one year. This late in the war, recruits to the 24th Michigan were not assigned to a specific company. Everyone knew that the war was almost over and the Regiment must soon be mustered out.

Possibly due to the poor sanitary conditions at Camp Butler, Able was reported "absent sick" for a time. He was 33 years old in the spring of 1865.

Abel's daughter, May Eloise Lobdell, later married Charles Newell Smith, the son of another 24th Michigan veteran, Dr. Charles Smith.
