Barney F. Campbell was born in New York Barney. Barney had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and stood 5 foot 8 and one-half inches tall. A sometime mariner, he was working as a saddler in Detroit in the summer of 1862. Barney enlisted in company H on July 26, 1862. Barney was 42 years old when he enlisted. He was mustered into service on August 13, 1862. He was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. Barney returned to the Regiment on September 17, 1863. He was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps on December 19, 1863. He was finally discharged for disability on April 21, 1864 at Washington D. C. Barney applied for admission to the Asylum for Disabled Veterans, in Milwaukee Wisconsin on January 11, 1868. The comments on his application form are very interesting: "Doesn't recall anything that happened to him from April 1864 to June 1867. Was in Poor House then, in Wayne Co. Stayed there until he went to Harper's Hospital in Dec. 1867. Says he is partially paralyzed. Has asthma also. Also has partial loss of sigh of both eyes." In the immediate aftermath of the war, pension regulations were very strict, and Barney was not considered eligible.
Nothing further is known about the man. He was married, however, and may have left descendants. At the time he applied to the home, his wife was still a resident of Detroit. (Only veterans were admitted, no wives). He died in 1881.
