Charles Hosmer was born in Huron Michigan sometime around 1844. 1862 found him still in Huron engaged in farming, probably on the family farm.
He is almost certainly related to Artemas Hosmer also of Huron,
who enlisted in company K on the same day as Charles. In fact,
since both were 18 years old there is a strong possibility that
they were twins!
Charles and Artemas enlisted in company K on August 5, 1862 at Huron. Both were 18 years old. They mustered into service with their company on August 14, 1862.
Little is know of the details of Charles' service. He was taken prisoner at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. He may have been slightly wounded. He was taken south to Richmond, Virginia, where he was held at the infamous Libby prison. Conditions at Libby were horrible, and Charles' condition worsened. He died a prisoner of war at Richmond Virginia on November 19, 1863. He was only 19. He is now buried in the National Cemetery at Richmond, Virginia.
