Francis Miller

Francis Miller was a native of Brownstown, where he worked on the family farm. He enlisted in Company K on August 2, 1862, during a recruiting rally held at Brownstown. Fifty-year-old Simon Miller also enlisted at that rally. In all likelihood he was Francis' father. Company K was mustered into service on August 14, 1862. Francis Miller was 18 years old.

Francis was wounded in the hip during the action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 1, 1863. He recovered, however, and returned to duty with the Regiment.

He was wounded again, this time in the leg and the shoulder, during the confusing fight at the Wilderness on May 5, 1864.

Curtis (p. 376) reports that he was "Doing better until night of May 9, when in a stampede from a supposed guerrilla attack, someone trod on his wounds, rendering them mortal."

He died on May 22, 1864, at Washington D.C. and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
