Henry Houk was a 21-year-old farmer in Redford during the summer of 1862. He enlisted in Captain Gordon's company, Company I, on July 26. He was one of the first men to do so. He was active in recruiting the company and was given the rank of Corporal. He was mustered into service on August 14, 1862.
Henry was wounded in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 1, 1863. Along with many of the wounded, he was taken prisoner, and was held in some southern prison. He eventually returned to the Regiment, in time to be with the Regiment for Grant's Overland Campaign.
Poor Henry was again taken prisoner at the Wilderness, Virginia, on May 5, 1864. This time he was taken to Andersonville prison, where he died on October 28, 1864. He is buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery, Grave No. 11593.
