John R. Brown

Born in New York, at the time of the Regiment's organization, John was a farmer in Brownstown. He enlisted in Company K, August 9th, 1862 at Brownstown, age 19. He was mustered into service August 14, 1862. He was wounded in the hand at the Battle of Laurel Hill (Spottsylvannia) on May 8th, 1864. After recovering from his wound, he was promoted to Corporal on January 1, 1865. He mustered out with the Regiment at Detroit, Michigan, June 30, 1865. Later in life, he was a resident of Flat Rock, Michigan. He attended the Dedication of the 24th Michigan's Monument at "Michigan Day at Gettysburg" , June 12th-14th, 1889.


Photograph taken after his promotion to corporal, most likely while the regiment was at Camp Butler, Illinois. Note excellent condition of the Hardee hat. This photograph is evidence that the Hardee hat was periodically re-issued throughout the war.
