James H. Johnson

Details of James H. Johnson's life and military service are scant. He was born in the small community of Wayne around the year 1843. By early August 1862, he was a farmer in nearby Dearborn.

James Johnson enlisted in Company D on August 5, 1862. He was 19 years old. He was mustered into service on August 13, 1862. He was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. His wound must have been serious, although there is no record that it required amputation. James Johnson never returned to duty with the 24th Michigan.

James Johnson was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps because of his wounds on June 15, 1864. He was discharged at Detroit on July 5, 1865, a few later than the rest of the 24th Michigan.

After the war James was very interested in veteran's affairs. He attended "Michigan Day at Gettysburg" in 1889. He also hosted at least one reunion of his comrades in Company D. Based on the illustration, James H. Johnson survived until at least 1907.
