A life-long resident of Sumpter, Michigan, 18 year old James Lewis enlisted in Company G on August 7, 1862 at Detroit. He had been a farmer. He was mustered into service with his company on August 13, 1862. During the intervening days, James probably spoke to his uncle, William Lewis (who enlisted in Company G on August 11, 1862).
James was promoted to corporal in recognition of his excellent service. He was wounded in action at Bethesda Church (near Cold Harbor, Va.) on June 3, 1864. The exact nature of his wounds is unclear. The must have been severe, however; James R. Lewis was discharged for disability at Detroit, Michigan on December 17, 1864.
