John Lucas was one of the oldest men in the Twenty-Fourth Michigan. He was born in England in 1810 or 1811. At the time of the Regiment's formation he was a 50 year old carpenter working in Detroit. He enlisted in company B, although there is some discrepancy as to the date. Both Curtis and Smith indicate that he was an original member of the Regiment, while the "Brown Book" indicates that he enlisted on July 24, 1863. It seems certain that the latter is a misprint; he is metioned in Edward Aldrich Raymor's diary on January 13, 1863.
Joseph was transferred to the Invalid Corps on July 1, 1863.
Curtis indicates that he was discharged for disability on July
6, 1863
Joseph was admitted to the National Soldiers Asylum in Milwaukee
Wisconsin on July 18, 1868. His disability is listed simply as
"rupture", with no additional details. His next of kin
was a friend Joseph Gillespie (Possibly James Gillespie of company
C), 55 Jones St., Detroit Michigan.
Joseph died on January 9, 1873 at the age of 68. He was buried
in Wood National Cemetery, Milwaukee Wisconsin.
