Germ W. Mokma, 19, previously of the province of Vriesland, Netherlands
was one of three brothers who immigrated to the United States
before the war. His older brother enlisted in the 8th MI Inf.
Sept. 18, 1861 and was killed at Chantilly, VA on Sept. 1, 1862.
Jerome volunteered and enlisted in the 24th on March 29, 1865
at Kalamazoo. His term of enlistment was one year. At this time,
the regiment was being recruited back to full strength. Such was
the reputation of the Regiment that this was accomplish in only
two weeks (600+ recruits). Given the situation in the Spring of
1865, however, this batch of recruits were never formally incorporated
into the company structure of the Regiment. Jerome mustered out
at Detroit, Michigan on June 28, 1865. Later in life, Germ changed
his name to Jerry and moved back to Holland, Michigan after the
war and became a bank official in Ottawa Co.
