A Michigan native, John F. Peterson was working as a laborer in Detroit during the summer of 1862. He enlisted in company H on July 29, 1862 at Detroit. He was 21. He mustered into service on August 13, 1862.
He was transferred to Invalid Corps January 15, 1864, probably
due to disease. He was discharged at Elmira, New York on July
13, 1865, from company F 19th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps.
This unit was assigned to guard duty at the infamous
Elmira Prison
