John Schultz

John Schultz was born in Prussia in about 1836. The date and circumstances of his emigration are unknown. At the time the Regiment was formed, he was employed as a farmer in "Wayne County".

He enlisted in Company E on August 5, 1862 at Detroit, and was mustered into service on August 13, 1862. He was 26.

Not very much is know about John's service. He was with the Regiment during the Battle of Fredericksburg, and seems to have also been on Burnside's Mud March. While in service, John was severely injured in the back by a fall. The injury was such that he was deemed unfit for field service. John Schultz was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability on February 28, 1863. Presumably his injury persisted into civilian life. Unfortunately, it would be many years before John would become eligible for a pension.

Like his was service, not much is known about his personal life. About the only thing that can be said was that he was the father of nine children: August, Fritz, Henry, John, Benjamin, Carrie, Lizzie, Fannie, and Minnie. He was proud of his wartime service, however brief it may have been, and took steps to ensure that the rough details of his service would be preserved for his descendants.
