Michael Handerkin (or Handerhin or even Hanrahan) was a 20 year old, native-born Detroiter when enlisted in the regiment on July 24, 1862. His occupation is listed as "moulder". He was mustered into service on August 13, 1862.
Curtis reports that he was in in
the hospital for two years, although the reason is not known.
Presumably he was either seriously ill or had been wounded. He
mustered out with the regiment on June 30, 1865 at Detroit.
At some unspecified date Michael also served with Company F, 4th
U.S. Infantry. This could have been either before or after the
Civil War.
Michael was admitted to the National Soldiers Asylum in Milwaukee
Wisconsin on September 17, 1870. His disability is listed simply
as "Injury of the breast and testicles", with no additional
details. He listed his sister, Mrs. T. F. Dean, 9th Ave. and Spence
Street, Detroit, as his next of kin.
