Minot S. Weed was born on November 16, 1844 to William Weed and Sally Ann Stevens in Salem, Michigan. Minot's parents had been among the first settlers in the Salem area, arriving there in 1826 from New Canaan, Connecticut. One of Sally's brothers, Joseph Stevens, accompanied them.
The State Adjutant General lists Minot's prewar residence as "Wayne County", while Curtis (p.328) indicates that Minot was engaged in farming in Plymouth, possibly as hired hand.
Minot enlisted in company C, on August 9, at Plymouth for 3 years. He was 18 years old. Company C was mustered into service on August 15, 1862.
Not too much is known about Minot's service. Early in his service he was a tentmate of Thomas Ballou, a peacetime acquaintance. Minot is mentioned in Thomas' surviving correspondence. He was among those who volunteered for duty with the "Iron Brigade Battery", Battery B, 4th U.S. He served with the Battery B 4th U. S. Artillery for 19 months before returning to duty with the regiment in 1864. Apparently, he was a good soldier; he was promoted to corporal on October 1, 1864. He was later promoted to Sergeant on April 1, 1865. Minot Weed mustered out with the Regiment at Detroit on June 30, 1865.
Minot attended the dedication of the 24th Michigan's Monument at "Michigan Day at Gettysburg" , June 12th-14th, 1889. At the time the "Brown Books" were compiled, circa 1905, Minot was a resident of Excelsior, Michigan. Minot Weed is buried in the Newburg Cemetery in Livonia, Michigan.
By a strange twist of fate, A descendant of Joseph Stevens, Minot's uncle, married a descendant of Thomas Armstrong in 1944 in Oregon. Thus the Mark Stevens family can claim 24th Michigan soldiers on both sides of the family tree.
