Oscar N. Castle

Born in Oakland County, Oscar Castle was a farmer, probably somewhere in Wayne County. The State Adjutant General's records, which are not always correct, list him as a resident of Detroit. He enlisted in company A on August 12, 1862 at Detroit. He was a little older than most recruits at 27. He was mustered into service on August 13, 1862.

Oscar was wounded in the body during the first day's fight at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. His wound was apparently very severe; he was no longer deemed capable of field service. He was transferred to Invalid Corps on February 15, 1864. Discharged at Elmira, New York July 14, 1865 from company K, 1st Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps. This unit was assigned to guard duty at the infamous Elmira Prison
