Patrick Clarey was Irish by birth, and was working in Detroit
as a teamster at the time the Regiment was formed. He enlisted
in company I on August 5, 1862. He was mustered into service on
August 14, 1862. Patrick was rather tall for the time, 5 foot
9 inches tall. He had a light complexion with gray eyes and dark
hair. He was only 18. He was mustered into service on August 14,
1862. He was only 16 years old.
He was wounded by a minnie ball at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.
The wound was very severe and necessitated the amputation of left
leg from above the knee. He was discharged for disability at Detroit
on February 26, 1864.
Patrick was admitted to the National Soldiers Asylum in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin on February 25, 1868. He was just 22 years old. He is
listed as single with no relatives. At the time, he was receiving
$15/month pension.
He attended the Dedication of the 24th Michigan's Monument at
"Michigan Day at Gettysburg",
June 12th-14th, 1889.
