A native of Detroit, Samuel Brown was a farmer
in Wayne County (location not specified), in the summer of 1862.
He enlisted in Company G on August 7, 1862 at Detroit. He was
26 years old. He was mustered into service on August 13, 1862.
Not very much is currently know about his wartime service. He was wounded in the thumb at the Wilderness on May 5, 1863. The severity of the wound is not known. In recognition of his good service, however, he was promoted to Corporal. Based on the chevrons, the photograph at left post-dates the promotion.
Samuel Brown mustered out with the regiment at Detroit on June 30, 1865.
Apparently, Samuel was still "above the sod" at the time Curtis published the regimental history in 1891.
