Billy Irving

William Irving was a native of England The circumstances surrounding his immigration are not known. At the time of the Regiment's formation, he was working as a "Trimmer". He enlisted in Company I on August 9, 1862 at Detroit. He was only 18 years old. Company I was mustered into service on August 14, 1862.

The men of Battery B found ways to amuse themselves during winter quarters. Buell (p. 53) indicates that men formed an impromptu "opera" or minstrel troupe. He mentions that Billy was a first rate "end man".

Billy Irving was killed in action at Laurel Hill (Spottsylvania) on May 12, 1864.
