William Young

Youngest "Man" in the 24th

When the Regiment formed Willy Young was a 13 (barely) year old student in Detroit. He apparently lied about his age, as the Adjutant General's records mistakenly indicated that he was 15.

Willy enlisted in Company G as a drummer, at Detroit on July 25th, 1862. He was one of the very first to enlist in the Regiment. He mustered into service August 7, 1862.

Willy served throughout the war, and mustered out with the regiment at Detroit Michigan, June 30, 1865. He would then have been only 16 years old.

He attended the Dedication of the 24th Michigan's Monument at "Michigan Day at Gettysburg" , June 12th-14th, 1889.
