ABUSIR

This was quite an experience. One I'll never forget for the rest of my life. The entire area consists of 7 pyramids, various mastabas and temples which are in different stages of excavation. When you walk around, there are pottery shards laying about and scaffolding here and there. It was originally excavated in 1902, but never completed. A Czech team is trying to finish it, and in the process, they discovered the untouched tomb of "Luf-aa", who was a director of a temple. The discovery was made in 1996 and the sarcophagus was opened on Feb. 25th 1998. Tutankhamun's was the only other tomb found intact in 1922.

Looking back at the entrance of a mortuary temple, at the pyramid of the pharoah Sahure. He died in 2446 bc.

Heavy stone blocks used for some purpose, possibly an outer wall. I thought at first it was an obelisk, but the hieroglyphs are meant to be read the way they are facing now. This is in the mortuary temple of Sahure.

Sahure's temple had some beautiful hieroglyphs, as shown on this stone block.

This is the entrance passage of the unfinished pyramid of the pharoah Raneferef. This area has been worked on since 1974.

Raneferef died before it was completed (2416 bc), so instead of completing the pyramid, they left it as a low mastaba, covered over the open top with a layer of clay and then covered it with desert stones.

This is the mortuary temple of Raneferef, with part of the unfinished pyramid wall on the right. The man with the black jacket is Fayz, the taxi driver, and the other is the guardian of the area who let me in, Abdel.
