_Anything_ is possible. Including death.
What is _common_ though, is a different matter :-)
What is common is: knee injuries of some kind, sprains, broken toes & torn
muscles.
It does not happen often enough so that it's anything to get scared about
though.
What everybody gets sooner or later is: sore muscles, mat burns, wounded
pride & an uncontrollable urge to do aikido exercises in public, causing
people to look very strangely at you.

In that case I suggest you take a look at "The Newbie Guide to Martial Arts
Training"

lot of tips for how to locate a dojo you'll like.

The two worst injuries I've heard of have both been dislocated knees, which
tends to happen if you can't be bothered to take your foot with you when you
tenkan.
Off the mat however, I've known people die in nasty ways, car accidents,
stabbings, etc..
Knew someone who broke his back falling off a mountain (like you do).
Seems Aikido is a much safer thing than many things in life.
Thank you for flying Church of England....
