THE SITUATION IN AMBON / MOLUCCAS Report no. 93
- CORPSES FOUND - As we mentioned in our Report 91 no.1, on Saturday, 18
November, a speedboat, having left Tulehu (island of Ambon) never arrived at its
destination i.e. Sirisori Islam. On November 21, two bodies (females) washed
ashore near Waai, both maimed.
- VISIT CANCELLED - Facing the worsening situation in Ambon, the visit of the
Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See (Vatican) to Ambon, which should take place
today, has been cancelled, because the Civil Emergency cannot guarantee his
safety. He will now restrict his visit to the Kei islands, where he is to arrive next
Friday, November 24.
- MSF CAR TARGET OF SNIPER - Anyone who during these last few days takes
the route Pohon Puleh, Perigi Lima, Kampung Kolam in Ambon town, risks his
life. No exception for a MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres) passengercar. When
passing Perigi Lima it was shot at by a sniper, shattering a side window panel of
the car, but leaving people inside the car unhurt.
- VICTIM - A muslim by the name of Ainuddin (22) was shot while being in a
building near the Dir Latumeten military hospital, Mangga Dua, supposedly by a
military. Two other were seriously wounded.
- INSULTING THE VICE GOVERNOR - The throwing of mineral water (and also of
mi and an egg) at the vice-governor Mrs. Paula B.Renyaan during a demonstration
by muslims on November 20 (see Report 91 no.1), evoked quite some reaction.
Fr. Agus Ulahaiyanan, chairman of our Crisis Centre, declared to Siwalima
newspaper, that apart from other considerations it should not be forgotten that
especially in the eyes of people from the S.E.Moluccas, specifically from the
Kei-Islands, this is a grave insult. Mrs. Paula happens to be a catholic from Kei.
Keiese people are ready to venture their lives for the honour of women. The
S.E.Moluccans in Ambon very much resent Mrs. Renyaan thus having been
treated.
