The book opens in The Morlock tunnels where Sabretooth is hunting down the last of the Morlocks left by the Marauders. The new-improved Caliban is hot on his trail, poised for revenge. X-Factor gives The New Mutants and Cable permission to reside in the basement remains of the X-Mansion that was destroyed by Sinister. The danger room and other vital parts are still intact and perfect for the studies and practice of Cable's young new team. Rictor is still hiding his hatred for Cable. At this point it is revealed through private thoughts that Cable had something to do with the death of Rictor's father. Cable also reveals in thoughts that a tragedy happened to his son, but no details are given yet. Rictor cracks in a danger room session and storms off defying orders not to go near the Morlock tunnels. Inside, Rictor meets Caliban and is seriously injured from a surprise attack by Sabretooth. Cannonball and Wolfsbane inform Cable of Rictor's actions and the team prepares to enter the tunnels to find him.
