The Falcon and the Mouse

The Falcon and the Mouse

"Squeak!" It scurries
through the grass.
A bolt of grey,
a desperate plight.

Evade the hunter
from up high.
An ominous speck
in the clear blue sky.

On silent wings
the falcon flies.
Two golden eyes,
airborn spies.

It spots its prey,
It hears the cry.
A triumphant scream
fills the sky.

A sudden plunge,
an unchecked drop,
a falling dart
hits its mark.

A final squeak.
Black tallons grab;
curving, grasping,
piercing warm flesh

carried aloft;
upwards, skyward.
Blood dripping
to mother earth.

Beady eyes
reflecting death.
A final struggle;
death throes.

A cliffside perch,
a safe haven.
The falcon rests,
a family feeds.
