Ship Design Notes for SCLS

Starship Missions

Troops

Starships of 2300AD perform many other duties other than combat, thus it's worth remembering that ships will need to carry troops. Capital ships will generally carry at least a Battalion of troops, Battleships at least a Company, Cruisers a Platoon, and Frigates a Section/ Squad.

Ground Strike Ordnance

Something I forgot was ground attack weapons. Simply set aside a quantity of tonnage as ground attack weapons, in multiples of 100 tons. (100 tons of ordnance = 1 Conventional Ground Strike)

Cargo

Cargo can include things like armoured units, mines, spare submunitions etc. Again, set aside an amount of tonnage, in mulitples of 100.

Ship Combat

The final mission ships must perform is space combat.

Starship Catagories

SCLS doesn't quite follow 2300 conventions, prefering to use more "intuitive" designations. This follows the rule that the smallest platform possible to perform a mission is best employed doing it.

SCLS Catagory SC Catagory Tonnage Range Typical Armament
Frigate Frigate 2000-3500 1 Battery, 2 Missiles, Armour 0-4
Missile Frigate Missile Frigate 2000-3500 1 Battery, 4-6 Missiles, Armour 0-4
Cruiser Destroyer 4000-5500 2 Batteries, 4-9 Missiles, Armour 0-4
Battleship Cruiser 8000+ 3-5 Batteries, 15-24 Missiles, Armour 0-6
Capital Ships Battlecruiser, Battleship, Carrier 30,000 + 4-11 Batteries, 16-48 Missiles, Fighters, Armour 3-7
Fighters Fighters, SDB >1000 1 Battery, Submunitions

Frigates are used for escort duty, scouting, and general fleet workhorse duties like couriers. They are generally lightly armed.

Missile Frigates are the poor mans Cruiser, carrying Cruiser levels of missiles, but with frigate self protection and sensor capacities.

Cruisers are suited for detatched duties such as raiding. They carry a fairly complete armament. In classic SC, they are the smallest potentially nuclear vessel.

Battleships are the main ships of the line. The Majority of Kafer ships are in this catagory, although heavy for it (mainly due to the Kafers lower technology).

Capital ships are suitable flagships for fleets, with a total capcity in all areas. They are heavily armed and armoured, carry major troop formations, fighters, ground attack weapons etc.

Fighters are short range vessels which carry beam weapons and submunitions, but never missiles.

Changes between SC and SCLS

All ships are assumed to be nuclear powered. I have MHD rules, but there is a flaw in them, in that the weapon batteries are assumed to be nuclear powered.
