Employment

New Information Paradigms (July 1999 - )

I currently work as a software developer for NIP Ltd. Work involves software development for virtual community and mobile computing (Palm platform) systems.

Internet Research and Development Centre, Buckingham, UK (November 1997 - June 1999)

I worked as an Internet Design Executive (Electronic Publishing Division) for IRDC (http://www.irdc.com/). My work involved with MCB University Press contract and is undertaken to ISO-9002 Specifications:

Internet Free-Press
Development and administration tasks for Internet Free-Press, a leading organisation dedicated to electronic publishing. Work mainly involved site maintenance, contribution to IF-P's TalkBack discussion group, and research into online publishing.

Virtual Conference Centre
MCB's Internet Conferencing system. I was responsible for website development, conferencing software updates, conference administration and site marketing. Primary work involved overhauling the conferencing system, website and documentation - which led to a major overhaul of the site for May 1999. Work on the site featured aspects of marketing, administration and managerial duties as well as HTML and Perl development.

Backup and Disaster Recovery
I was solely responsible for the Publishing Team backup and recovery procedures. This included a twice weekly tape backup of files on all machines used by the team, plus development and documentation of disaster recovery procedures.

CGI Scripting and General Website Development
As well as general website design and development, I was responsible for maintenance and development of CGI scripts (see below). CGI and Perl programming was self-taught, and I undertook research into Internet marketing techniques under the tutorship of the IRDC marketing team. I also maintained and archived the Forum Convenors mailing list and supporting webpage.

Career Outlook

IRDC provided me with an excellent overview of the use and development of the Internet - from electronic publishing to Internet conferencing, website design to project management and administration. The company helped to focus my website development skills, while broadening my view of new technologies and their applications.

NIP have allowed me to take my technical skills to the next level, while opening me further to new technologies - particularly mobile computing systems such as Palm devices and WAP phones which will form the core of future networking and communications technology.
