Plot

Trapped in a crippled ISSV on Christmas Day, the 58th find themselves in no man's land - drifting towards enemy territory. Fearing the worst, the 58th expect to die at the hands of the Chigs or from an impact with interstellar debris. But have the Chigs discovered the "spirit of Christmas"?

Personal Comments

As a non-American I often find US TV shows, no matter how serious, end up getting rather slushy when it comes to the subjects of Thanksgiving, New Year, or Christmas. Fortunately, this episode breaks the cycle and deals with the scenario in a sensitive, low-profile way.

The plot hints at a friendlier side to the Chigs, and also gives more evidence that they have some important social/cultural knowledge of humans (well, Christian humans at least). The part at the beginning of the episode detailing the famous WW I Christmas day ceasefire was surely no coincidence. So, are the Chigs respectful of human beliefs? Did they want to make a goodwill gesture? Or was it the work of a handful of sympathetic Chigs, rather than a more general decision?

I liked Hawkes' comment about Jesus being an In Vitro, a perfectly acceptable judgement to make considering his lack of knowledge. I might put it in as the quote for this episode...

Production Goofs

This episode is the first on my second video tape, and appears to have suffered some minor damage - the sound was fine, but the picture could really have been a LOT better in places. I hope Fox TV release the episodes on Video or DVD sometime! Anyway, due to damage it was a little difficult to determine any production goofs at times.

The ISSV did seem in an unusually low orbit with the comet though, but it's difficult to tell so I'm probably wrong. I'm sure there's a nitpick lurking with the comet tail too - with no star in the immediate vicinity, the comet shouldn't have much of a tail or probably none at all. I'll need to check this one up though.
