This book was recommended to me by my mother. This may seem strange to you, especially since my mother is not interested in the fantasy genre. Her record serves her well. She introduced me to Clive Barker, Orson Scott Card and Michael Crichton in addition to Philip Pullman. Not too shabby, in my opinion.
[ The Golden Compass ] I cannot say enough about the quality of this work. It is hard to describe the reading experience. A gradual enlightenment is probably as good as any description. This story begins simply; innocently. However, the style immediately grabs you. That was the source of my first smile. Before I finished the first chapter, I sat back and reviewed a few paragraphs, smiling. Philip Pullman had my respect from that moment on.

Endearing is a word I imagine has been and will be associated with this story. There is a piece of Lyra (the main character) in all of us.

Are you a fellow Pullman admirer? I would love to hear from you. The Golden Compass was my introduction to Pullman and I am curious about his earlier work.
