Gambit smiled as he pushed the door all the way open for Hank to see what was going on inside.
He took one look at the two waiters, catering trollie and the musician. "Oh my word! Remy, I can come back later." He started to leave.
"Of course not. Come in, come in." Remy pulled Hank inside by his arm, closing the door behind him.
"But I don't want to intrude on your special evening." Hank protested.
"Hi Hank. Take a load off." She pointed at Remy's computer desk chair. "Are yah hungry?"
"Yeah, where Gambit's manners? Please join us."
"I really shouldn't ..." Then he paused. "... Is that Chicken Jambalaya I smell?" He sniffed, his head automatically turning in the direction of the catering cart. "And Apple Cake?"
Gambit motioned for one of the waiters to fix Hank a place at the table. He got Hank the chair from his computer desk.
"The bathroom is through there if'in yah want tah wash up first."
"Thank you." Hank placed the stack of file folders on the corner of the chestier bureau on his way to the bath room.
When he came back out, Gambit offered him the seat to his left.
"Thank you." He accepted the chair. "I was going to grab
something when I left here ..." His eyes grew wide as the waiter
dowled out portions of the entrees and side dishes on his crystal plate.
"Remy says the cornbread that has the red specks, is hot." She warned.
"Oh yes, yes, Jalapeno." He took one of the Jalapeno pieces. "I love it that way." He smiled.
Everyone settled back down. Rogue & Gambit enjoyed their desert as Henry concentrated on enjoying the main course.
Gambit swallowed the last bit of his Apple Cake, then he looked over at Rogue. She smiled back wanly.
She knew that Gambit had went to all this trouble for her benefit. Heck, he could've served peanut butter and jelly. Would not have made any difference. She loved him for the effort. The food had been scrumptious. She had managed, if only for an hour or so, to forget her troubles. But with the ever presence of Doctor Henry McCoy in the room ... Time for reality tah come back.
Gambit waited until Henry had finished his meal. The waiter was serving Hank a helping of the desert when he decided to speak up.
"So Hank ..." Gambit darted his napkin on each corner of his mouth. " ... Wha' did ya find?"
*Ahem* Hank cleared his throat and wiped his mouth before he spoke. "Aw yes. *Ahem* With further study, I've found that my initial diagnosis were correct. Rogue's hormones don't know if she is pregnant or not. Therefore, her body can not get accustomed to the idea of her being pregnant. That is why she is violently ill one minute then fine the next. I've also determined that her immune system has suffered because the presence of the babies are taking precidents over everything else. Her uterine wall has suffered also. It probably would be still strong enough for one baby, but we are talking about two."
Rogue sat up in her seat. "Surely yah not suggesting we do away with one of them?" She bit out.
Gambit leaned over, patting her on the shoulder briefly, "Of course he ain't ..." He turned back to Hank. "...are ya Doc?"
"No, I'm not. All of this can be corrected simply by Rogue no longer using the bracelet until the children are born. As far as her uterine wall is concerned, only time can heal that. She will have to stay off her feet more, completely even as the pregnancy progresses."
Rogue relaxed back in her chair. No sah'prises ... Good. She breathe a sigh of relief.
"Oh, one more thing." Hank added as he turned his attention fully on Rogue. "My initial estamation on your conception date was off a tad. I've placed your conception date on or before July 4th of this year. Therefore, barring any other mishaps and if you do exactly as I tell you ... you should deliver on March 13th of next year."
Gambit scratched his head. "July 4th ... July 4th ..." Then
it all came back to him. Now I remember! Dat was de three
day weekend Scott gave e'vrybody off. Chere and I flew ta de Bahamas.
She wore dat crazy silk flag designed string bikini dat barely covered
all de raht places. I couldn't keep my hands off her.
Whene'vah de bracelet was on ... we ... Oh Saints!
He grinned knowingly. I wonder does she remember ...
He turned to see her blush red as she fanned herself with her napkin.
Guess dat means she does? He raised an eyebrow at her.
Rogue blushed again recognizing that look on Remy's face. He had remembered their wild passionate weekend in the Bahamas too. "Mah, it's gett'in a might warm in here." She lifted her thick mane of hair up off of her neck as she fanned more.
"Are you naucious again my Dear? Hot flashes are also a common side effect of pregnancy. Do you need assistance ..." Hank was getting up from the table to aid her to the bathroom when Remy stopped him.
Gambit smiled as he laid a halting hand on Henry's fore arm. "Dis ain't no 'Hot Flash' mon'ami." Then he chuckled.
Henry looked at the two dumbfounded. "Oh! Oh! O.K. Then let me make my good-byes to you both." He reached into his pocket. "Here Rogue ..." He handed her the negating bracelet. "... I think you'll be needing this for the next six hours."
She lowered her head and smiled as she took the bracelet out of his hand. "Thank yah Sugah."
"Much obliged Homme, much'a bliged." Gambit rose to follow him to the door. "Thanks, Hank." He opened the door for the departing man.
"Rogue, expect me around 9:00 a.m. in the morning. I will need to give your vitamins and literature on what to expect during your pregnancy and during childbirth. I will need to see you on a daily basis to monitor your progress for the next month or so. Then hopefully, we can put you on a normal schedule of once every two weeks then weekly as your pregnancy draws to an end."
"All raht Sugah."
"Remy, could I see you for a moment ... outside?" Hank whispered.
"Sure." Gambit looked back at Rogue. "Be raht back Chere." She nodded but was already turning her attention to the bracelet that was laying in front of her.
Gambit stepped out into the hall way with Hank. He closed the door behind them. Hanks covert attitude puzzled him. He pulled his brow together as he regarded his friend. "Wha's up Doc?"
Hank leaned over to Gambit, "I did not want to mention this in front of Rogue because it is only a theory. But I think may have stumbled across a way for you and her to maintain human to human contact indefinitely, without the aid of the bracelet." He said down low.
"Really!"
Hank put a finger to his mouth, "Sssshh."
"Oh ..." He turned back to the door briefly. "Really? Dat's great." He noticed that Hank did not share in his jubilants. "Ya find anot'er way for Chere ta negate her powers or not?"
"Remy ... this has nothing to do with Rogue's being able to control her powers."
"Eh, wha'cha talk'in 'bout? Dat's de only way it'll work."
Hank slowly shook his head, No. "No my friend, it's not. It has everything to do with 'you' controling yours."
