The 1998 Emmy Awards

1998 Emmy Awards

Winners of the 50th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on August 29 (Creative Arts Emmys) and September 13 (Televised Emmys). The X-Files did exceptionally well in receiving nominations this year, garnering a staggering sixteen nods. However, when all was said and done the show turned up with only two Emmys, and failed for the fourth year in a row to win the prestigious Best Drama award.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny were both presenters at these Emmys, announcing the awards for Best Actress in a Miniseries and Best Variety Special, respectively. For more information about the Emmys, and a complete list of winners, visit The Official Emmys Website.

And the winners are...

Quotables

"By the way, the Emmys, of course were moved from Pasadena to Los Angeles this year, so David could be closer to his wife." - Garry Shandling

From E! Online

After that, a treat: Garry Shandling and David Duchovny further explore that chemistry they enjoyed on The Larry Sanders Show. Now that Sanders is off HBO, Fox should get him a job as one of Mulder's little green men or something--these two are really funny together. Banter aside, they're there to announce the Best Variety Music or Comedy Special.

From The New York Times

What The X-Files should have won:

Best Performances as a Couple With Too Much Sexual Tension for Their Own Good in a Drama or Comedy Series. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, as Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully, the frustrated F.B.I. agents of "The X-Files," win this one hands down. Because you can count on your fingers the number of dates either one of them has had in the course of five seasons. And because that bee-sting-interrupted-almost-kiss in "The X-Files Movie" was cruel and unusual audience punishment. (Honorable mention goes to David Hyde Pierce and Jane Leeves, as Dr. Niles Crane and Daphne Moon, in "Frasier," and Garry Shandling and Rip Torn, as Larry Sanders and Arthur, on "The Larry Sanders Show.")

From People Magazine

What about the true test of any award show's worth: the afterparties? Top-notch, said most celebs, if only for the chow. "Four hours is too long to go without food or water," said Téa Leoni, who had been surprised to discover that drinks at the Emmys weren't free (she had no money). "I was about ready to stand there with an empty coffee cup begging for spare change." Luckily, Leoni and husband David Duchovny of The X Files were able to nosh on poached pears and lemon spinach at the Governor's Ball in the hall alongside the Shrine Auditorium.
