![]() | Tales to Astonish followed the adventures of the Hulk after his adventures in the Avengers (Issues #1-5). At first he shared the book with Ant-Man. In fact, issue #59 features the Hulk battling the shrinking hero. The insertion of the Hulk into Tales was both literal and figurative. Side-by-side with the two heroes fighting is an ad from Marvel which heralds the Hulk story continuing in the next issue. Ant-Man was later dropped from the book. In his place, starting issue #70, Marvel returned the Sub-Mariner to his own feature drawn by Bill Everett (his original Golden Age artist). This was a much better combination. Hulk and Sub-Mariner had once teamed up to battle common foes (Avengers #4). They both shared an anti-hero attitude which gave the book more focus. Marvel could reach both groups of fans who loved the company's bad boy heroes. |
