This was part of a note from Jodie to Patricia Clements co chair of Parthecon

"Andy had a heart attack on Tuesday, March 16, spent two days in the
hospital in Morehead where they did tests, was sent to Lexington on
Thursday, the 18th.

On Friday, March 19, he had quadruple by-pass surgery.
There was no damage to the heart. The arteries were pretty much clogged.
He had to return to ICU when his lungs retained fluids.
We were ready to leave last Thursday and his heart began beating
irregularly, not unusual, but he had to stay until they got it regular.

We came home Saturday, the 27th, and expect a full recovery.
Andy's walking outside every day and I'm learning sodium-free cooking.

I stayed in Lexington for a week. Our daughter Scotty was with me/us
most of that time.

We will not be at Parthecon.

I don't know what else to tell you. Andy was a surprisingly good patient
and his--and my--spirits are good.
Jodie
PS - I'd appreciate no phone calls. It's all I can do to handle
family and local calls.
 Thanks
  Jodie"
And Jodie sent this message..
Our mailing address is:
70 Sesame Street
Morehead KY 40351
I prefer no blanket e-mailings and no phone calls.
 Thanks.
We'll miss being in Nashville.
Jodie

Future Convention news

In July 1979: Rusty Hevelin & Bill Bowers with the help of some of the CFG, held the first Spacecon -- to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing. On the 30th anniversary (give or take a few days) in celebration of Apollo 11's lunar landing – will come the return of Space Con [Fair Warning, though: We need at least 30 room deposits at the Holiday Inn by
May 15, 1999, or we'll have to abort the (re)launch.]
All hotel reservations must be made through Rusty.
And Rusty not only doesn't "take" Visa, he doesn't take MasterCard, Discover, Amex, etc., either.
Which means if you don’t preregister and reserve a room you better call Rusty to make sure there is a con.
Room Rates: $59.00 [including tax] per night Memberships: $15.00
Send All Monies to: Rusty Hevelin / PO Box 1332 / Dayton OH 45401

July 23-25, Wapakoneta, OH. Which is the birthplace of Neil Armstrong -- and the Holiday Inn is located adjacent to the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum.

Off of con news to club news.. but in some ways really both
The web meister of the Mid West and CFG site Scott Street (ScottSt@ix.netcom.com) is looking for photos and memories of past Mid West cons..
Hmm there was that time that Ken Moore and Cliff Amos were
flouncing around in the bikini bathing suits complete with
dress cummerbunds in the middle of the Holidome..

More convention news///

Got this news from Robert Edwards via our list serv
And he got it from usenet..
Which some times isn’t to reliable but yes Virginia it is true..
What follows are some excerpts of what he mailed and my commentary.
The San Francisco bid for the 2002 wold con is running a bid not only for San Fran but also for San Jose (will they throw competing room parties .. would be fun)
The bid has the same date (well not quite.. the San Francisco in 2002 bid is
for Friday through Tuesday, August 30 through September 3, due to a scheduling conflict with the convention center..
The San Jose is for Thursday through Monday, August 29 through September 2,)
., the same people, just different locations..

It is the same old story..
They started having problems with their primary hotel in this case a Marriott.

According to Kevin Standlee, the chair of the bid.
" .. they wrote to us demanding a number of concessions, both financial
and organizational, which would prevent us from being able
to offer the type of Worldcon that fans expect."

"While we were prepared to continue negotiating with the Marriott, they have made it clear that we are not going to be able to reach an acceptable compromise," continued Standlee. "Instead, we are preparing a package similar to that used in San Francisco in 1993, although the convention would not be as spread out as ConFrancisco was. This would involve other hotels in the area of the San Francisco Moscone Convention Center, some of which are actually closer to the Moscone Center than the Marriott. “

Well while all of this is going on the San Jose convention and visitor bureau
People show up and want to make a deal.
Supposedly the facilities would be just as good but cheaper.

San Jose is only 50 miles away and is connected to San Fran by rail so fans could still jaunt off and play tourist.

Why aren’t they just dropping the San Fran bid in favor of the San Jose bid..
Well they are still trying to works things out in San Fran with the Marriott but they say they want to present the fans with the info about both venues and let the chose.
The membership levels and prices are the same for both bids.
The head of the bid is promising to treat both bids equally but is this really going to be possible.
What if the financial advantages is so great for San Jose they subconsciously start to subvert the San Fran bid.
And can one committee really to two bids up right.
Yes, they are only competing against themselves since their only real competition
Seattle bowed out several months ago, but world con bids are expensive, and consume the lives of those involved.
No instead of putting some excitement in the race we may just see a halfing of the bid effort.. throwing parties at a fewer number of conventions ,,ect.

It will be interesting to see this Bay Area in 2002 unfold.
Even more interesting will be the reaction of fandom especially those of other bids who either had to chose to bid a new site and those who had to let them dreams die because of similar problems and felt they couldn’t do the World Con justice with the alternative sites they had available.

Well anyway it all will be settled at this years world con in Australia..
I know it is too late but what would really make things interesting would to see a real competing bid come forth.
Check out their web site at http://www.sfsfc.org/worldcon
available. Representatives of the bids plan to be at_
and you can e mail them at info@sfsfc.org
or by snail mail at:
PO Box 61363, Sunnyvale CA 94088-1363 USA._

Some other news from the lisr serv..
Tom Feller says he reads, "voraciously" is Harry Turtledove.

Robert Edwards recommends
"Sex And Zen and A Bullet Through the Head"
The Essential Guide to Hong Kong's Mind Bending Films
By Stefan Hammond & Mike Wilkins
ISBN 0-684-80341-0 Trade paperback 272 pages US $12

And also from Robert..
"What's the author of Snow Crash and Diamond age been up to?
I don't know, as far as SF writing.
But he's written a delightful essay on his experiences with computers "In the Beginning was the Command Line" available at: http://www.cryptonomicon.com/beginning_print.html
He doesn't use Macs no more.
This is a long but very well written and rewarding piece."

And he also talks about something Dan Caldwell and a couple of others have mentioned.. The Fortean Times a monthly magazine full of research about strange news and phenomena.
