Club news:
The picnic is almost here. Once again the club and some of the members will be providing
food (can you say ribs and chicken).
In case you haven't been there this is a real nice site right on the lake next
to a sandy beach. It is no where near as crowded as other sites on the lake.
So bring your water floats ect and come on out.
You might want to consider bringing a lantern and flashlight as we have the shelter
till ten-o clock and there are no electrical outlets.
There are bathrooms with running water on site through.
If you are planning on coming let one of the club officers know by the 18th
so we know how much food to cook. The picnic is only $ 4 per person so come on out.
T Contact us for directions.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
At Outside con once again the club will be having a fundraiser rummage sale.
So bring all of your no longer close to your heart books , music,
interesting stuff to the con for this worthy cause.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
At the last club meeting:
Talk about the t shirts for the Charlotte bid (Dan Caldwell is now on the board.
The club is independent for now on the 2004 bid) There was talk about the
FBI carnivore computer email snooping program.
Talk about upcoming cons bought up old room crashing/sharing tales including
the classic ," I thought he was your friend"; beat"No, I thought he was YOUR friend".
Other odd con memories also included the time a water main broke in downtown Nashville
during the World Fantasy con and it knocked out power to part of down town including
the con hotels. The generators for the Hyatt managed to run some of the elevators
and the lights but the Hermitage had its lights knocked out
(I believe water may have gotten to their generators) and just how spooky the Hermitage
looked with its marble and wood vaulted entrance.
Tales of unusual luggage: try explaining a chain mail shirt for instance.
On the always popular topic the weather George Gillespie commented about how
an English friend had this to say about getting caught in a tornado
," How can you allow these here") (editor comment : hey I agree with that ;
please someone invent anti tornado spray)
Going back to conventions Dan quoted someone that he cant remember who once said
that running a con is the most sophisticated form of masochism.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The question that seems to keep on popping up "It is 2000. Where are the flying cars?"
I am almost tempted to say maybe it is a good thing we don't have them;
the way some people drive it would be flying cars falling on my head
instead of raindrops falling on my head. A more realistic answer could be the
energy crisis.
------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie passed around photos of the convention he has attended including Midsouth,
Liberty and Parthecon.
Fanzines were passed around at the meeting and John borrowed Challenger 11.

Toni Weisskopf had this clever idea for the mailist :
" Why not tie in "How I Became an SF Fan" with your idea for a book discussion program,
The First SF Book I Read--and then have whoever's it is lead the discussion.
My first (adult) SF book was LITTLEFUZZY by H. Beam Piper,
for instance, which would be a great book to talk about."
Well what about it? does this sound like a plan. Little Fuzzy would be an interesting
book to start with. I believe it is available in libraries if it is out of print.
While it wasn't one of my first books (I really can't remember my first novel.
I do remember my first SF story or rather stories. It was the I ROBOT collection
by Asimov.) H Beam Piper whose death was pretty tragic by the way wrote little Fuzzy.
Toni also sent some nice egoboo for Kronos and some notes about
the Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts controversy. ( Which I believe was mentioned on the Locus web site)
An interesting note.
Toni hadn't heard about it until the last issue of Kronos.
It is interesting that this took place in Ontario because (once again plug)
it is home of the fantastic web site Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance
( http://www.religioustolerance.org/ocrt_hp.htm)
They now have a section on the Harry Potter controversy.
I found some news about the gopher guts thing at:
http://www.kingstonwhigstandard.com/, which reported a happy ending.
From the papers web site:
"Gopher Guts' remains kid stuff", reported by Sarah Crosbie, Whig-Standard Staff Writer.
"The final chapter has been written in the Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts saga.
The book, subtitled, The subversive folklore of children,
by T.K.F. Weisskopf and Josepha Sherman, will remain in the children's section by
a unanimous decision of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library Board. "
The article went on to give the one parents reason for wanting the book removed
from the children's section and why it was decided to leave it there.
According to the article the board members," stated reasons why the book should remain
in the children's section, including the fact that the board recently passed a motion
by the Freedom to Read Coalition declaring that Kingston is a freedom to read community
that does not condone censorship."
The Bemscribe again. While Toni didn't know about this the paper was able to
contact Josepha Sherman who considered the idea of removing the book from the
children's section "amusing".
Sherman commented to the paper:
"Children have very important things to say and they're dealing with urgent matters
like life, death, reproduction and the way they deal with these important topics
is by the subversive rhymes they make up ... It's the only rebellion they can get
away with," she said.
And oh yes: banned books week is coming up soon. September 23 - 30th.
To learn more about it check out the American Library Association web site.

Past Kronos results:
Last issue contained a note from the SFC business meeting minutes (thanks to Tom Feller)
about the SFC bulletin number one. Well a little after Kronos ventured out into
the ether this came in:
"I think I sent Judy Bemis or whoever was doing the SFC Archive, copies (zeroxed)
of BOTH "Issue 1, number 1's." Everyone, including me went crazy for years,
because the Frierson zines only go back to "issue 2." That's because Glen Brock
(Atlanta) was the de facto President of SFC *before* Meade Frierson.
He (Glen) did TWO different "issue #1's."

Worldcon News..
From the info bot e-mail.
Online Registration [www] available through 15-Aug-2000, at the $150 rate.
Registration by mail ended 15-Jul-2000.
Only the Fairmont has rooms available. losing date for booking rooms through
One Stop Chicago is 03-Aug-2000.
An interesting note about the Hugo nominations from the Hugo admin Mike Nelson.
He noted that less than ten percent of the members of Aussiecon Three
and Chicon 2000 who were eligible to make nominations bothered to do so.
He went on to note that only 168 people nominated 130 different novelettes.
Todd Cameron Hamilton, (artshow@chicon.org) lost most of the email sent to him
during the last month due to a hardware failure.
So if you contacted him by email in the last month be sure to drop a note to
make sure he received it. Because, the art show info went out later
then they planned they will be receiving mail in art until August the 28th,
which is a Monday. But, you need to send in a reservation request now so they
know how may panels they will need.
They are hoping to have a very limited number of panels for walk ins
but there is no guarantee you will get space

They hope to have more info posted soon.

For those who cannot go to Worldcon
Labor Day weekend is going to be busy around here.
One of my favorite things the fundraiser for the Nashville Symphony
otherwise known as the Italian Street fair (held in Centennial Park) is that weekend.
Also, there will be an Anime Con here in town plus a SCA event nearby.
Well at least those of us who can't go have something else to do beside
cry in our beverage of choice.
#########################################################
Other upcoming convention news:
From Uncle Timmy's THE REVENGE OF HUMP DAY tbolgeo@cdc.net
The Master of Ceremonies for LibertyCon 15 will be Eric Flint. David Drake
is the Literary Guest of Honor, Larry Elmore the Artist Guest of Honor,
and Debbie Hughes as the Special Guest .
also from Timmy :From Mike Kennedy about the Jophan Family Reunion
The Birmingham Science Fiction Club presents :
The Jophan Family Reunion August 18 -20, at the The Oxford, AL Holiday Inn
for $15 (under 12 free)
This used to be an invitation only con (the Bemscribe wasn't invited)
but according to a couple of people it is now an open convention.
But be forewarned this is a relaxacon, even more so than Concave.
It is a bunch of fans sitting around a pool swapping tall tales and draw chalk pictures on the sidewalk.
The Relative of Honor: Mike Kennedy

Conventions past:
I am still hoping for a review of MidWest and Inconjunction. hint hint..
A little piece of sad news that may have a major impact on Midwest Con.
Pat and Roger Sims are hoping they will have moved to Orlando before the time
of the next MidWest con.
The only thing I know for sure that MidWest will be had at a different hotel next year.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Rivercon.
The Rivercon review is not going to be ready for this issue.
It will be in the September /Outside Con issue next month.
Let us just say the unanimous choice for fool of the weekend has to be Ken
for missing the con for Oshkosh.
I lost track of how many people asked where Ken was.
It had 1267 (or was it 12 76 I hate being dyslexic arggghh
(according to Sue Francis though I later heard it inched up to 1280).
I had a great time. Saw a lot of people I hadn't seen in years.
Didn't get a chance to talk with everyone I wanted to.
Sherry who loves filk was in filk fan heaven.
The dealer's room as usual was great
with a blend of new books, used and rare books.
Plus jewelry, gaming stuff and SCA type garb.
The weather this year was a wonderful contrast to last year.
Yes it rained but rain and cool temps are better than 117 degrees.
Well the weather was great except for part of the ride up
with Mark Edwards when some storm clouds looked as if
they where having delusions of grandeur and started to rotate.
(no it didn't drop a funnel but it was scary for a moment)
The con was extremely well run as usual. I heard more than one person comment
just how smooth things seemed to run..the "dance" for the audience always went
on despite what may have been happening behind the scene.
(I believe Mark may have been disappointed this was to have been his first
and only Rivercon).
Next issue reports on the programming, parties, who was there
(the surprise for me was the nice surprise of seeing Meade and Penny Frierson)
the masquerade and all the final good byes.
Ps since I didn't make it to the closing ceremonies I would appreciate it if
some of you would pass along your comments on it and a couple
of lines about the con itself. Thanks.
As I have said numerous times. I understand why Steve and Sue
are doing this but it is very sad.
So thanks to them and to Cliff Amos (the original chair and founder)
Bob Roehm the vice chair for all 25 years and all the others
who bought us Rivercon over the years.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The convention that will take place in the area next year
(across the river in Clarksville,In) is in no way officially connected to Rivercon.
There are all new chairs and being across the river a new hotel.
Their very good choice for Fan Guests are Steve and Sue.
While Rivercon was primarily a literary SF fannish con they are going to try
and do a multi media and literary SF fannish con.
While some of the people are new several of them have worked on Rivercon.
A couple of people are carrying over including Judi Lundy and Debbie Allen
who were in charge of Rivercons hospitality suite.
The new cons name is ConGlomeration and it will take place
August 10 - 12, 2001
at the Holiday Inn Lakeview in Clarksville, In.
ConGlomeration POB 32095, Louisville, Ky. 40232
ShadowR@iglou.com - Sean Reck (who was the head of gaming for
Rivercon and is one of the three co chairs)
